Hey all, I have a Uberti walker and 2-1851 navys. They all use #10 caps. My 1860 army Uses the #11 cap. Can someone tell me what the differences are between the 2 caps. Also ,I picked up some older sealed tins of caps at a local gun show and the only # I seen on it was 1075. The guy said he didn't know the size. No problem as I can use both. I am sure this was talked about before, but I only scrolled back a few pages. Thanks all, Bob

Ruger Bob from ME (I bought an antique gun at Kittery Trading Post last night), I drag this out whenever a cap question comes up. Basically the higher the number, the bigger the cap. All #10 that I have bought are smaller than #11s but others will tell you that this might not be true. I use caps that have to be pinched to stay on the nipple - a smaller cap might fit until you fire the gun a few times and the nipples foul up and get "bigger." Anyways, read this:
From an old Colt Industries pamphlet:
"Percussion caps are now made in sizes from nine to thirteen. Ten and eleven are the best numbers for the small and medium-sized arms, and twelve for the larger sizes, although, as different-sized nipples are sometimes met in specimens of the same model, no hard and fast rule can be given. It is better to have caps slightly too large than too small, as large caps can be pinched together at the bottom enough so they will stay on the nipples, but small ones must be driven down on the nipple by the blow of the hammer, and this process frequently cushions the blow to the extent of producing a misfire."

thanks all for the replys. I was curious about the different #s. I do apreciate the time both of you spent to reply. in my opinion, most cross fires are caused from the nipple , not the -loose ball. Was just trying to figure what the #'s ment. Other then #10 and #11. Thanks all, Bob

There's another topic of discussion - I've had two "cross fires" and both times were from the ball end.
Gotta love this sport.

TESO nipples

I replaced the nipples in my Pietta 1851 Navy with TRESO nipples from the Possibles Shop http://www.possibleshop.com/nipples.htm

I got the 11-50-106 nipples. They look sweet in the revolver. I tried them out on the range the first time today. Had no problems -- they all stayed on, ejected easily with a slight flip after each shot. No misfires -- and I shot 36 rounds.

Here's a photo of 5 different caps:

From L to R:
Remington #10, Rem. #11, CCI #10, CCI #11, RWS #1075.

I don't know what the two nipples are from or who made them.
