This trick goes back to WW1 or possibly even the Civil War (I've read accounts of countersnipers doing this with a hat and a ramrod in the Civil War). In WW1 the French made paper-mache heads with painted faces, strapped a helmet on... some even had a lit cigarette in the mouth with a tube so the hoister could puff on it. When it was hit, down they bring it as realistically as possible, and compare angles.
