Hello all, I joined after lurking for quite some time and would like to thank some of the posters here for giving out some sound advice.

I recently purchased a sig p239 for carry and love it.

Already have 300+ rounds through it without any failures.

There is only one problem: I would like a pistol with a rail so I can attach a light, making it a better bedside piece.
Also - the short grip (width is perfect for me) of the p239 is my only complaint; about a 1/4" bigger (longer) would be better.

My question is this:
If cost is not an issue, what would be a great .40 pistol for carry?

I have my eye on the p229 since the controls are the same and it is similar in size, with the slightly longer grip I want. Any other suggestions?

I'll definitely go for the following:

HK USP compact
CZ-75B compact
CZ-PO1

Regards.

My friend has a usp and it seemed that their idea of 'compact' was a little large.

He said it was a usp compact, not the usp.

I also checked one out at a local shop and although the dimensions on H&K's website say it is thinner than my p239, it certainly felt a lot thicker and uncomfortable in my hand ...

- I'm also pretty new to pistols, so excuse me if this is a stupid question:
Should I be feeling more recoil in a polymer frame gun? The sigs feel a lot less 'snappy' to me than the H&K.

I carry a Kahr K40 that I bought used,Kahr also makes a polymer framed version,as well as smaller, more compact models with both poly and steel frames. However,I have seen posts by people who have had problems with NIB Kahr pistols,so maybe I got one with all the bugs worked out already.I also see a lot of people who swear by the Springfield XD40 Compact, but I've never even held one. Also take a look at the Taurus Millenium Pro series, not really high on the $$$ scale, but well built and very concealable. If 45acp is an option, check out the Para Ordnance Para Carry C6.45... :D

Thanks, man.

I held the XD and it felt a little wierd in my hand.

The kahr is great - my friend had one, but it didn't feel as solid as the sig to me. When I purchased the p239, the runner-up was the kahr PM40.

Does kahr make a steel frame with a rail?

If price wasn't an issue, I'd still be carying my CZ75 PO1. I wouldn't mind one of the CZ75 Compact 40s out now, but I wouldn't get rid of this one, either. :)

I'm in NYS - I don't think I can get them.

Plus- it only extends the front side of the grip, which isn't a big problem. The problem (which is a plus for concealed carry) is that the grip angles so that it is shorter on the back end. My fingers fit on the grip almost perfectly at the front end, it's the back that isn't long enough.

Also doesn't solve my need for a rail.

To be perfectly honest, my G23 and 27 are, imo, the best 40s made (for me) hands down. I have complete faith that they will go bang every time I pull the trigger and will digest anything I feed them. They point naturally for me and are more than accurate enough for their intended mission. I've shot others and there are some good ones out there, but these do it better for me than any I've shot at any price.

Sorry, new to the pistol world ...

G23 = Glocks?

If so, I'm not sure of the models, but I've fired three Glocks - a .45, .40 & 9mm

The problem I had with all of them is that they felt very uncomfortable to me personally. When I went back and fourth between them and the kahr (the polymer pistol I was comparing them to), I was much more accurate with the kahr.

All my friends with Glocks love them & say great things - just not the right fit for me I guess.

I shot very well (for me) with a couple of Kimers, but they have a lot of edges that stick out, making them a little difficult for me to carry concealed. I think I'm partial to the thinner grips.

I hate to say this but DaliGene ask about carry pistols with RAILS.
Most the suggestions so far don't have rails.

I would think a this point in time most pistols would have rails (especially new models). I could see not wanting to retool for older models. Rails wouldn't add much to cost or weight and would be a nifty thing to have.

Does anyone have any experience with the p229 and p239 in .40?

Like I said, I love my p239, but it just needs to be a hair longer on the back end of the grip and have a rail ...
This is just internet research talking, but it seems to me that the p229 is what I'm looking for - plus an added bonus is that I don't have to re-train to use a different operating system.

I'm just looking for new ideas or see if I'm missing somehting - plus if anyone has experience with these two pistols, I'd appreciate it; I value first hand over reading alone.

PS - I checked out the CZ and it seems that it has a similar (not sure what it's called) feature to the 1911 that protects the web of your hand. When I tried this style out, it always got caught on my shirt or stuck out. Am I looking at the right pistol?

- oh and thanks for the help, guys - much appreciated.

Don't like the 40 much but I would recomend the Glock 27 or 23. If you like the Sig the 239 is a great little pistol.

I seem to be going in that direction, but because I'm new to this, I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks Again.

Price not an issue I'd have some sort of custom 10mm built ... either on a 1911 or maybe engineer something from scratch :p

Currently I'm packing a Kahr MK9 Elite98 ... its pretty nice and much less expensive then some custom designed uberpistol.

I'm not a large frame guy (6' 185lbs) so I have a probelm concealing anything with things that stick out like on the 1911 design. I love them though.

Where does a 10mm fall in the caliber lineup?

Carry Pistols

Greeting's All-

Those folk's that know me will tell you that my first choice in a carry
pistol has always been, and continues to be the very fine West German
.45 caliber SIG P220A that I own. Its a first class weapon, with an
extremely good RELIABILITY track record. I have bet my life on this record since 1988, and have never looked back! :D
