just read a thread and it got me thinking

does anyone beef up the caliber from normal carry when going to the zoo, for the risk they might have dangerous game after them?

probably a very slight risk but hey that tiger got loose

i was thinking a big revolver or 10mm
but curious if anybody switches sidearms because of animal risk?

I wouldn't change my carry at the zoo. My plan for tiger escapes and the like is to grab the nearest emo kid and throw them in the path of the angry dangerous critter. That way, everyone gets away, and the next time said emo kid whines about how life is pain, he or she will have a real frame of reference to go by.

ha ha but what if it was a gorilla and it liked the black clothes of said emo kid

This is almost as bad as the "But what if you have a gang of sixteen drug crazed lunatics that can't feel pain because if the magical drugs they are on chasing you wearing body armor and you only have a revolver?" How many crazy hypothetical situations that will likely never happen can we come up with?

No, I don't think you need to strap on your .44 mag because you are taking your family to the zoo...

EDIT: Realized that sounded harsh, no offense intended, I've just read some ridiculous hypothetical situations recently. To answer your question politely, your normal carry will be fine, as another person will be your biggest threat, and I think you might be stretching it even there to say you don't feel safe at your local zoo unless you have a gun on you. Our local zoo is pretty safe, maybe others are vastly different...

yeah everyone thinks that until a tiger gets loose and mauls a couple folk

I don't change what I carry for the zoo,,,, I just have to keep an eye on more animals than usual:what:.

The point I'm making is, by that logic, you probably just shouldn't go to the zoo in the first place. Eventually you will have to draw the line with the "what if" hypothetical situations. Again, just my foolish opinion...

um yeah where were you last summer
the zoo tried to blame it on the 2 dudes that got mauled
said they were possibly intoxicated and might have taunted the tiger
turns out that the tiger cage wasnt up to code

Really? I never did follow up on that, I just assumed the kids were drunk and harassing the tiger and got what was coming to them...!

Anyway, since most zoos I know of charge ADMISSION, it's a null point here in NC - can't CCW ANYTHING in there!

i dont care if they rubbed tiger phermones (sp) all over themselves
the animals arent supposed to get out
they were negligent by not having there "cage" up to code

No, I see no reason to carry something big just in case a tiger gets loose. I don't have to run faster than the tiger. I just have to run faster than the guy behind me. :D

This is where wing shooting might pay off. Wing the guy in front of you and he becomes the guy behind you.

If I remember right all things occured, drunkeness (and stoned), taunting, and an enclosure that was not up to code.

i normally carry a xd sc .40 with me, but when i go to the jacksonville zoo i mount my army issues m242 25 mm chain gun on the train that goes around so that way at anytime i can hit the animals from any angle!:)

no really though i carry the same handgun here or there, shot placement is key , and seriously for most of the animals that might give you trouble, or the ones that have the highest probability of even comming close to causing you bodily harm, i am sure they will be frightened by the mere sound of a shot and will run away with there tail between there legs. and if not that is why you carry spare mags.

Yep, pretty much.

P.S. There is no "code" for tiger enclosures. The San Fran Zoo enclosure didn't meet current AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) recommendations, but that goes for lots of zoos. The tiger exhibit did meet recommendations when it was built, but the AZA changed those recommendations later. The AZA is an industry group made up of zoo people, they have no power to do anything but certify or de-certify member organizations. Fewer than 10% of zoos and aquariums are AZA certified.

P.P.S. I work at a zoo and carry a Leatherman...
