BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.

Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.

Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.

State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him.

If this guy had not survived, could you imagine the CSI guys trying to figure this one out!!!!

They'd just find some DNA on the bullet, cross-reference it with every round ever fired in the western hemisphere, and check that with the national Gun-Owning Cat Registration Database. And it'd only take 6 hours.

Sounds like the new "I was cleaning it and it just went off" excuse to me.

That being said, this morning our cats knocked off a bunch of seeds that the wife planted over the weekend. Seems like a good reason to own drop-safe guns. Or to not leave them laying around for the animals to play with.

Call in Ace Ventura to check the kitty paws for powder residue or traces of CLP.

By the way, think this cat is still around?

Yeah, ban them there cats. I bet the cat meant to kill the guy but shot too low. Fool + loaded gun laying around unattended = trouble no matter who or what is in the area. I like this formula crap.

When guns are outlawed

only felines will own guns!

Or is it "When CATS are outlawed, only outlaws will own cats" ?

Well, I know which way I'm going, regardless...... ;)

I've known Preacherman's cats to play with gun parts, but not guns. Must be the wife's cat and she is pissed at him.

His Dog Shot Him

Yep, it's been several years now but "Bob" (name changed to protect the dumb) got shot by his dog. At the plant we heard that "Bob" was off work because of an accident and then we found out it was because his dog shot him. We were all a little skeptical (was this an over aggressive Doberman?) until Bob came back to work. So I asked Bob what happened and he said yes it was true.........his dog shot him. Seems Bob was out hunting with his favorite hunting dog. He needed to cross a fence so he propped his shotgun against a tree which was next to the fence. Bob started to cross over and the dog got excited about something it saw, the dog brushed up against the shotgun which fell, then fired which desposited a small amount of lead shot into Bob's lower leg. Bob was fine although he was off work for a couple of weeks and was very good natured about the jokes that went around. However the most obvious question never really got answered which was why would you prop up a shotgun with a round in the chamber and the safety off? He should have been sentenced to wear a T-shirt that said "I am stupid!"
