cc gp100

Hey all, I am in the market for a gp100 4'. I was just curious as to whether or not this is a feasible/comfortable idea for cc? I really like the feel, weight, and caliber of the gp 100 and love it in a 4'. however, this will most likely be mainly used for cc. to me it's either this or a beretta px4 storm full size in 40. After this purchase my wife will inherit my xd 40, so i am no stranger to plastic, but would much prefer the steel. If a 4' gp 100 is feasible to conceal carry then I will definitely go with it, but if it's better with a 3' it may be harder to make the decision.:banghead: Please give me any info you may have thanks all.

I really like the feel of the 4' gp100 as well. its going to be the next gun I purchase. But it seems like you'd be carrying around a tank in your pocket if you had it. It's a real heavy gun for CC. Have you looked at the SP101 at all?

i have looked at it, but its just too dang small. "feel like im gonna brake the da#$ thing." I don't really care for it. especially the size. Sure go ahead and say im just compensating, but its how i feel.

When I carry a revolver as an off duty primary it's most often a 3" GP100 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special II.

The 3" guns carry like a 2" gun and shoot like a 4" gun. It really does give you the best of both worlds.

There once was a GP100 made with the 3" barrel that did not have the full underlug or rib. This would probably be ideal as a weight saving measure. Have to scour the used market though.

I had a 3" GP100. Bought it to carry. Carried it a few time and quit; it's too dang big and bulky. Say what you may about the SP gun but you ain't gonna break it. The SP is ever bit as good a gun as the GP. I trade off the GP and never looked back. I can carry a full sized GLOCK as easy or easier than the 3" GP. Just my two cents.

I have a 3" GP100

I generally carry my SP101 2.25", .357. all day, every day, out here in the country.
It's lighter & handier. It's in a Galco high-ride open-top pancake holster.

When I go up to the City, I carry the 3" GP100. It's easier to shoot with heavier loads, quicker follow-up shots. And, it has an extra round.
I carry it in a Galco high-ride, open-top pancake holster, or a Simply Rugged
Sourdough Pancake holster.
It's a 3" for me.

Had a GP 3". Was too heavy and bulky for me, got the SP101 and haven't looked back (for carry). For me, carrying is a system and it all depends on many variables, i.e. clothing as it related to weather, belt, holster, speed loaders/speed strips, etc.

I don't think you would have much luck concealing either a 3' or a 4' GP100. A 3" or 4" on the other hand shouldn't be too much of a problem.

If I recall correctly, they did make a GP 100 with some massive barrel length like that for export to Britain.

Consider a Ruger Six-series? Kinda between the SP and GP frames.

Getting harder to find and value seems to be climbing, but probably no worse than a NIB Gp100.

earlthegoat makes a good point: I had a friend who carried daily with the 1/2 lug 3-inch, fixed sight, round butt GP100. If there was ever a carry GP, that was it.

He carried it appendix, with one of those LAW type pouches, sometimes with only a T-shirt for cover. He had that thing on him all the time.

Of course, some days he just didn't seem up to it; I also saw him with a sig p-230 whenever he just got tired of the big Ruger.

When I had a 4" GP I found it a little too uncomfortable to carry. It is heavy.

You would be surprised what a big difference one inch makes when carrying a revolver. A 3" revolver carries in an IWB holster is way more comfortable than a 4" revolver. It's also a good compromise because while a 4" revolver is easier to shoot well the 3" model is easier to aim than a 2" model.

As for weight, a GP-100 of any length is a heavy revolver. If you can find a used 3" Ruger Six-Series or S&W K frame revolver you will be much happier IMO. I'm on the hunt for a S&W M15 right now.

Wouldn't it be nice to open carry without suffering the repercussions of stupidity by the public? Well, until that day happens my GP100 6" will sit in the safe. Although I love my revolver, its just too big, bulky, and heavy to conceal. Sure, knock 3" off the barrel and its still going to be bulky for anything other than shoulder or fanny pack carry, imho.

Have you considered a CZ P-07 Duty? It will carry over twice the rounds that a GP100 will carry, it is lighter to carry, far easier to conceal, and it is a good quality firearm that is in the price neighborhood (give or take) of the GP100.
