Both, started carrying knives camping at age 7-8, everyday at 18, and firearms regulary since sept 2003. I find the knife gets used more and is more useful on a everyday basis, the handgun more comforting on a daily basis .
My knife (Gerber folder I picked up somewhere) is either in my pocket or right next to the keys & wallet. The pistol is in the safe. There are days where if I know I will be going somewhere that a pistol isn't allowed but a knife will be ok then the pistol will stay home.
I've carried folders all my life, mostly for work, and have only carried a gun for a year. The knife has nothing to do with the gun - I'd carry it anyway. This way you're just prepared for any shootin' OR cuttin' that might be needed.
I carry a Kimber Compact along a cheap and dull folder. When its misplaced I carry a CRKT M16-12z, which is normally used for work since it actually keeps an edge and doesn't need sharpened twice a week.
Sig P239 or P228, depending on weather, and either a mini Griptilian or CRKT Hawk D.O.G. Even if I'm in a spot where carrying a sidearm isn't an option, I've always got the folder.
I don't consider the knife a weapon, though. It's just a handy thing to have.
I'm in the both category, but the knife I carry is more of a tool than weapon. It's a small Kershaw spring "assisted" piece. I also carry a "Tinker" model Swiss Army Knife and a Leatherman tool.
