CCW in a water park?

My family and I went to a local water park yesterday and as we were going through the ticket line I noticed a man having a discussion with a police officer. I gathered in short notice that this person was trying to enter the park with a revolver in his pocket. No big deal to me really. I failed to notice any no cary sign but I really dont look for that stuff because I dont carry in these type places where chlorinated water is.

Moving on we got in the gate and I moved over and was "fumbling" with the stroller and the swim bags and such to see what the deal was. I gather this guy could have entered with the gun undetected but he aparent asked the guy taking tickets if he can carry a gun in the park(not too smart). Also he was pocket carry in a white and I could see the gun plainly. As I stood there he mentioned something about he had been swimming in pools before with his gun in his pocket. After that I had heard enough and went on with my day. I am certian he did not get in the park with the gun.

My thoughts on this event are
Why would you even want to go swimming with a gun in your pocket? Sounds like a invetation for gun failer to me. And I am pro gun and RTKBA and everything but sometimes the gun is better off being left in the car. I have seen folks here on THR claim they refuse to go any where with out a gun including their shower and further claim to not go on vacations based on gun restrictions.....Kinda sad on both sides of the fence Wont go have fun with out a gun and Cant go have fun with a gun.

Seriously, I have a friend that keeps a NAA .22 for situations like this. It's still going strong after years of chlorinated water exposure.
 
I'm thinking a cleavage holster would be appropriate for the ladies - I'm not sure about the guys though. :neener:

Seriously though, I see a lot more questions about carry in places that are really sort of ridiculous to people with common sense. They will yell and scream because they cant carry in a post office, Walmart, or other restricted places. Are people seriously that paranoid of the world around them?!

Alot of folks seem to want to be the hero in case of "that bad situation" or "SHTF in your local neighborhood". Not sure I trust that view. I carry, but I understand that my wits and brain are more powerful than 1000 Atomics! If I get killed in a situation in where my wits fail and cannot have a weapon, no force on earth, weapon, wits, anything, would save me.
 
Funny thing is, if the authorities didn't make a big deal about it, it wouldn't be a big deal. It's ONLY an issue because someone is saying "you can't have that here".

is it really the authorities though? They can only enforce what the law says, I think the blame runs far deeper than just the authorities, more like the general anti-gun save the children public.

None the less though if he had not asked and had actually concealed his gun he would have been fine.
 
I question the common sense of people who don't have enough sense to STHU and not frighten the minimum wage ticket taker who knows little, and whose only power is to cause you trouble.

Oh, and water parks are the perfect use case for car lock boxes.

Just imagine if you will a 450 pound guy in a speedo trying to draw a S&W J frame from the waist band

It would be like trying to take the ham out of a hot ham and cheese sandwich!

Alright, I'll admit to being the odd man out here. I've got a little .32 that I carry a few times a year, specifically when the wife and I take our son to the public pool or waterparks. I've got an aunt who made me a smatrcarry-esque "kangaroo pouch" and I drop it in there, swim shorts on over top. When I get home I dunk it in wd-40 to get rid of the water, strip it, wipe and re-lube it. Then it sits in the drawer for another few months.

I carry at the pool/waterparks for the same reason I carry everywhere else. I have no idea who the freaks are or where they plan to be today. So I do what I can to protect my family.

I don't doubt some do. Personally I only care about MY family. You should have brought your own gun. It's not my job to put my familys' financial security and my life at risk for someone who isn't smart enough to protect themselves. Would I feel sorry for you? Yep. But I'd get to go home with my family, not to jail or a morgue because I stepped into somebody elses problem because they didn't bring defensive tools to the pool.

You got a family? Protect them. Nobody else will, and somebody out there wants to hurt them just for "feces" and grins.

I was using "authorities" in the broadest possible terms, to wit: anyone who can actually have you detained/ejected for any reason (yes, including the ticket taker).
 
I get tired of the "should I carry or not?" issue.
Would be nice if I could just carry, period, without worry - not just for the "anytime anywhere" view, but the "I don't have time to think about it so much so just put it in my pocket like the other mundane stuff and be done with it."
 
I was in a theme park with a group of friends a few years ago, and since this particular park had some rides where you get wet, I was carrying in a fanny pack. This was a perfect way to carry in theme parks before 9/11 and the bag searches spawned by it, because a good number of tourists carry fanny packs, so they blend in well.

Anyway, one of the friends asked my girlfriend why I carried "that stupid fanny pack" to the park. The question was asked out of my earshot. Well, the girlfriend told her. The friend FREAKED out. The ensuing conversation went like this:

Freaked Out Friend: (loudly in a crowd) "WHY DO YOU HAVE A GUN IN THAT BAG?!?!"
ME: "It doesn't fit in my pocket. Please lower your voice."
FOF: "You know what I mean. Why do you carry a gun?"
ME: "In case someone tries to harm me or someone near me."
FOF: "Do you really think someone is going to attack you here? Are you that paranoid?"
ME: "If I really thought that, I wouldn't be here. I am not dumb enough to go looking for a gunfight."
FOF: "So what's the big deal then?"
ME: "Do tourists carry lots of cash?"
FOF "Yes"
ME: "Do you think the bad guys know that, too? Remember the 2 rapes that happened here last year?"


The point is, crime happens everywhere, especially at tourist attractions and events. That doesn't mean you have to advertise.

I hate it when people use logic. :rolleyes:

I don't take my firearm into the waterpark, but if something happens, I guess it was my time to go. Should I be carrying? Maybe. Is it best to be prepared all the time. Yep. Does that mean it happens? Nope.

For those that carry in areas most of us don't, good for them, it is an inconvenience but at least there is a good guy packing if something does go wrong.

Comes down to personal choice, not paranoia, in my opinion.
 
OK - dumb question here but, what happens to steel (alloys, etc.) with repeated complete submersion in chlorinated water? You really would have to "dunk" in in wd40 wouldn't you? Also, if you've spent all day with your gun "hidden" somewhere beneath swim trunks of whatever kind, will the ammo still function?

Actually, at 450 lbs I really doubt he would need to stuff it in the waistband of his speedo. He could just lift up the nearest roll of skin covered adipose tissue and tuck it in the fold. Depending on the roll, he could possible get away with a 6" N Frame. :p

I Nam we carried at all times. Even in the shower. Placed the gun in a sealed baggy, hung on a cord around the neck.
 
Waterparks are nasty holes full of screaming kids. I'll take a lake any day. Even if the local swimming holes are notorious for aggressive beaver.
 
My water park is the pool in my back yard. And yes I carry to the pool, but not in it. My pool my rules.

I don't much go for water parks anyway, but have been to a few in the past and did not carry there. In NC that would be illegal as you cannot carry anywhere that charges an admission fee. So this takes out water parks, movie theaters, concerts, etc.
