A friend has offered to sell me his Smith and Wesson M&P15 5.56mm AR-15 and he is including 5 mags with ammo, vertical grip with Surefire light, and front Trijicon night sight. The rifle has had 150 rounds through it in 3 years, and he is offering it to me for $900. I know virtually nothing about AR rifles, but it looks like a good deal (to me). Is this an okay rifle to get for a newbie, and is this a reasonable deal? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

How much ammo? What brand? Are they reloads?

If it's a box of 20, I'd probably pass. If it's a full case minus 150 rounds, you might have something there.

Well that is about $60 in ammo.
Need to know the model of M&P what type of mags and what type of light. With the info given right now it can be either an ok deal or a killer deal.

What Azizza said.
Vertical grip with Surefire light as one unit, or el cheapo VFG and a Surefire G2? Because the former is quite pricey, and the latter combo is pretty inexpensive.

It is just the M&P 15 with carry handle 5.56mm. The vertical grip is a Command Arms Accessories that sells for about $65, and I'm unsure about the type of Surefire, but I assume it's a G2.

with the price of AR's having come down the way they have, most people selling used ones have WAY more in their guns than they should have. a gun that costs 700 new now was probably purchased for 1000 2 years ago. allow for a 20% price drop for a used gun and you're still better off buying new now. and most folks don't even want to sell for a 20% discount. they want at least what they had in it. it's the housing market all over again.

now, it's a friend so I'd hate to gouge him, but I wouldn't give more than 600 for the gun itself, 30 for the light, 30 for the VFG, $8 a mag, and $60 in ammo. package deal around $750 plus whatever the night sight is or is not worth to you. you decide if the options it has on it are worth buying to you, or if you'd prefer to not have them.

Not to mention it sounds like an A2. While A2s are fine rifles and my first AR was an A2 it doesn't leave much optic options.

Don't believe S&W offers the A2 model. Their AR's carrying handle is detachable.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but check out Spike's Tactical. They are good rifles and you can get a new one for something like $800 I think. You might also want to see what Aimsurplus has in stock.

my spikes upper franken-gun lower works great. I don't know if the coupon code from over ar ar15.com still works or not, but if you go the spikes route you might take a look. it was like $50 off.

spike's is offering tier one quality complete rifles right now for $800 brand new. Nothing wrong with m&p but you could do better than the above rifle.
