Check out my newly customized Detonics CombatMaster!

I bought my "Georgia generation" Detonics CombatMaster .45 last fall, it was used but ANIB. It was a great little gun as it was - accurate, reliable, very well fitted and finished, but not exactly what I wanted. I have a number of 1911s and variants, I carry one on duty, another off duty, I shoot IDPA with them, I have some that have never been shot, I have them in .22, 9mm, .38 Super, .357mag, .45, and .50AE. But I didn't have a BBQ gun, one that is done up just for carrying when you go out and want to impress.

Well, we have a big family reunion coming up this weekend and about a month ago I decided I was going to turn my Detonics into my first BBQ (or church or court or pimp or whatever you want to call it) gun. I wanted to fancy it up but wanted the improvements to be functional as well as cosmetic. I spoke to my friend Wayne Dietrich and his son Robin about the changes I wanted to make. They own Deitrich Gunsmithy in Otis, ME and have done work on several other guns for me. I had them break all the edges as the gun was very sharp all over, undercut the trigger guard, recontour the mainspring housing and blend it into the frame, bob the hammer, install a Fusion carbon fiber trigger, tune the action, cut an 11deg crown on the muzzle, and finish it with a bright polish on everything but the top strap. In keeping with the subtle reshaping of the grip frame and mainspring housing, and to match the contrasting black sights and trigger, I replaced the original grips with a set of thin black Alumagrips.

So, incredibly, since these things seldom work out in such short time frame, the package is ready for our trip with two days to spare! I think the gun came out great. It looks terrific and except for the polish the changes are pretty subtle. All of the edges are now smooth and clean, the very short grip frame is more comfortable and the gun settles in the hand better. The trigger is clean and crisp and it shoots great. The Alumagrips fit absolutely perfectly and allow for a solid grip even though the front and backstraps are smooth. The holster is a Safariland 568, nothing fancy but it looks good, rides at just the right height for me and holds the gun securely and tight to the body. It'll do until I can have something more appropriate made for it.

Here are some before and after pics, let me know what you guys think!

I love what they did to the rear of the slide. What is that called?
All Detonics guns came that way to allow for easier cocking when carried in condition two, it was sort of their trademark look.

Nice gun! But it hardly qualifies as a BBQ gun. Where's the engraving and gold inlay and mother of pearl grips? The diamond studs and sequins on the holster? No? That's what I thought. It's just a really sweet looking every day carry project... :D

I know - no sequins, no gold, no engraving - I do have some faux mother of pearl grips, though. Besides, Maine BBQs aren't quite as flashy as some of those shindigs they put on out west, these folks aren't quite ready for all that!:D

WOW! Great custom work, though I actually preferred the wood Detonics grips to the black Alumagrips. Overall, very nicely (and tastefully), done. Given your regional disposition perhaps you should call it your Clam Bake Gun!

Thanks for the compliments, guys!!

The wood grips just didn't work with the bright polish, even my wife said they made the gun look fake.

I think you're right about calling it a Clam Bake Gun but the reunion we're going to Sunday is in Maryland so I guess it will have to do as a Crab Boil Gun for this event!

Outstanding! Your efforts are well worth it as the Detonics can be a great pistol. Mine is also a Georgia, one of the first 150 to come out of Pendergrass.

Quick question. What size grips work with the CombatMaster? I have the wood but wouldn't mind something in either aluminum or G10. I'm having the same problem with my STI LS9 and I have no idea the proper size of those grips.

WC145, That's NOT a BBQ gun.

That's more of a "Frame in a Shadow Box and Hang on the Wall", Piece. :)

Beautiful..!

Congrats.

My gun is #35 off the Georgia line.
The Alumagrips are the subcompact size, they list them for the Detonics and the STI Rogue, you can email them about the LS9. The ones I got are the thin "Deluxe Checkered - Black Anodized Tactical", with frame savers and short black grips screws and bushings the total was $77.40 inc shipping and they took about two weeks to arrive. They fit perfect and make the gun feel substantially narrower.
