Hi Folks,
I need some advice. I am a novice shooter in Chicago. I got my FOID card and have been shooting for about a year. I'm interested in purchasing. I took the class and I know I need to get my CFP. Before I do that, I'm trying to find some info about what guns are legal. It is freaking impossible! :banghead:

I have looked on police sites, IL-NRA sites, advocate sites...nothing!

I did find the list of banned guns which is a useless list of guns that haven't been manufactured in decades.

I read that mags over 10 rounds are illegal but that would make almost every semi-auto on the market illegal! Is that the case?

Can I buy a glock?
Beretta CX4?
Smith and Wesson M&P15-22?
Keltec SUB-2000?

These are all guns that I'm thinking about. I know that I can get a SW 686 which is on my list but how about these guns...and why? Even the gun stores don't seem to know.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Why not go to a gun shop or the range that you've been shooting at and ask?

*EDIT* I find it extremely odd that gun shops in the area don't know. Have you been to more than one? If so, ask them how they manage to stay in business. I'm dying to hear the answer.

Being an NY resident, I regret to find myself in your same situation when I go back home.

The bright side, is that most reputable manufacturers are aware of the bans, and can supply 10 round capacity magazines with new firearms, or at a small price.

Happy shooting!

The Glock is the only permitable gun you listed in Chicago - as long as you have magazines less than 12 rounds. The CX4 and sub2000 are considered "assault weapons" by Cook County so Chicago does too. The weird thing is that the Cook County AWB only affects unincorporated CC. It's a bigger mess than you think.

The unsafe gun list can be found at Chicagopolice.org

I am not sure why you chose to list the makes/models you did, but most .45 cal autos are normally issued with 8 or 10 rd mags. Even the ones like the HK45 or HK45c, the CZ97 as well as all the 1911 clones.

If you are restricted to 10 rds make them big.

Edited to add: The CZ75B is 9mm, I know has a 10 rd mag available, and with a Kadet kit you can also fire 22 in the same weapon.

In addition to the "unsafe" list (which is really a modern version of the "saturday night special" rasicst policies), you need to be very mindful of the Cook County assault weapons ban, as mentioned above.

The AWB lists a number of traits that your firearm may not have. The most notable ones are the capacity, and pistol grip. No pistol grip rifles.

Unless you're a gang banger or a felon, Chicago has an interest in thwarting your efforts to become a gun owner.

I don't think there is a gun store in Chicago city limits. I could be wrong but sure don't recall one. I think Daley drove them out years ago.

I ulimately did what PX15 suggested. I voted and fought against the crazy laws for 20 years. I moved a few guns out of Cook County, to a friends house, when the AWB passed and followed my guns out of the county a few years later. I finally got out of the state all together 12 years ago and took my guns and tax money with me.

From what I know it is closest to Chicago:
Shore Galleries Inc
3318 W Devon Ave
Lincolnwood, IL 60712
Check with them

IGW
7229 W Grand Ave
Elmwood Park, IL. 60707

is just as close as Shore. Both are right across the street from Chicago.

Please go to Cabela's or Maxons. Gat doesn't deserve any business with the way management treats customers, especially people trying to sell him guns.

Barry (Maxons) is a great guy and will tell you everything you need to know.

www.illinoiscarry.com/forum is probably the best bet for learning about the laws and processes from people who have actually gone through them.

Also a good swap/sale forum to locally get a nice gun.

I really want to get the Springfield XDm, but I can't find a 10 round capacity magazine (saw some older posts stating that Springfield wont make them, at least for the newer XDm's). I saw a guy that modifies them, but I dont think that's legal either (and I don't want to find out by getting arrested!) My second choice is a Glock 19, I know I can get a 10 round mag, but I don't want that to be the deciding factor. Any ideas?

Why couldn't a person in that city/state just go to a gun shop and buy a gun? Wouldn't the gun shop only be selling legal firearms of that city/state to legal customers?

That's because there are no gun shops left in Chicago! I have to go out of cook county to shoot, buy ammo, etc and the high capacity mag laws don't't apply there.

Doesn't the Springfield XDm 3.8 come with a 10 round magazine and a larger capacity magazine? Sell or trade the larger for a second 10 rounder, keep the XDm.

Just got a response from Springfield:

Hi Ivan,
Thank you for your interest in Springfield Armory Products. I do not know of any plans to offer XDM 9mm or .40 magazines in ten round capacities. I will forward your request to our research and development dept for further consideration. If you have any other questions please give me a call at 1-800-680-6866 ext 8996.

Thank you,

Dflat7,

Have you thought about maybe a C&R pistol? Maybe something like a CZ-52 in 7.62X25mm (That is .308 in inches) Nasty fast cartridge, Some good SD ammo available at 1700+fps and 500+foot pounds muzzle energy, still some inexpensive mil-surp to practice with. Not expensive, Very reliable. If the barrel has been damaged by the old corrosive primers, new barrels are available for >$40, and it can be converted to 9mm with a barrel and spring change, (but who would want to?) 8 round Magazine. I love mine.

BTW: Do not shoot this pistol without double hearing protection. It is loud.

That's odd. My XD9SC has a 10 round magazine, and a 15 I believe with a sleeve. I looked on the website and it says they have a 13 round and 16 round mag.

I know it's not a XDm but I KNEW they had 10 round mags on an XD!

This is common in NY too. The laws are so confusing and contradictory it becomes a game that no one is sure of. Then it gets down to individual county practices. As confusion reigns, people get intimidated, and fail to exercise their rights. Fewer apply for permits and licenses, which suits the fools in power just fine. This is not done by accident. Another Elena Kagan or Sotomayor and we won't have to worry about the 2A.

Regarding other matters. What we have here is selective indignation. I can accept that.
