Been too long since i have made it to the range. Finally got out today. It was a pretty pleasant 45 degrees and sunny, late afternoon.

First up, i chrono'd some 78gr lrn bullets out of my ruger single six magnum, 5.5" barrel. 2.9gr bullseye was giving about 975fps. While certainly not a barnburner, i think i'll reduce a bit next time around. I dont load 32 h&r to set any records.

Next up was the cmp garand. Its been giving me fits with handloads (fires fine, extracts and cycles... not so much) Finally brought the chrono along today. First i tried some s&b m1 garand spec loads. Cycled fine. 2619fps avg with a 150fmj projectile. My handloads with imr 4895, 47.8gr, also with a hornady 150gr fmjbt bullet, averaged 2625fps, but 2 of 5 failed to strip the next round. I have never tumbled loaded rounds before, meaning im shooting rounds with leftover lube. Next time around i'll use same load, but tumble to remove lube after sizing. If anyone has other ideas, im all ears.

Finally the brand new 480 ruger. Super blackhawk 6.5" bisley. I bought for a price too good to pass up. Turns out .475 bullets are not everywhere, but i found some. Nor are they cheap. And load data is also pretty limited. In case it helps anyone else, i settled on the following loads. Note that these are pretty light (relatively speaking), as i start conservative when exact load data for my bullet isnt published.

First up, a missouri bullet co, .475 bullet weighing 340 grains. 2400 is my choice powder and winchester large pistol primers. Starline brass. Velocity is fps and an average of at least 3 shots.
16.9gr @ 925fps
17.3gr @ 1003fps
18.9gr @ 1099fps.
None of these showed signs of pressure. I expect i'll get another 200fps or so without issue.

Next was the hunter supply lead flat point, 412gr bullet. Used h110 and starline brass, but again had to guestimate/extrapolate an exact load, so erred on the side of caution. Started at 19.2gr with a winchester large pistol primer. Velocity averaged 1044fps. I expect another 100fps or so isnt out of the question.

Will try to update the 480 loads when i get a chance, in hopes it can help someone else out.

Happy shooting!

Could be your hold on the M1, even gas operated guns need a firm grip to
cycle properly. If a recoil operated gun, pistol, rifle, or shotgun is not held
firmly enough, the gun will miss feed or jam.

This will happen with gas operated firearms too.

I don't think the lube is a problem and the velocity generated by your ammo suggests the correct pressure to cycle the rifle. Very strange. Are the cases sized correctly?

If it were an issue with hold, shouldnt it misbehave with factory ammo as well? Factory ammo from S&B, designed for the M1, cycles fine. And velocity is very close between the two (my handloads being a hair faster).

The cases pass the "plunk test". I full length size and trim with each loading. Outside of plunk test, what would be an indication of incorrect sizing?

If it passes it passes. I'm out of guesses right now, sorry.

Try bumping up your loads. I use H4895 at 48.0gr for peak accuracy from my Garands. Many use 46.5, but mine don’t give as consistent velocity and accuracy at this level. I use 46.5 with 165-168gr bullets.

The WWII load with IMR4895 was 50.0gr at 2,800fps. Tell you something?
As long as propellant burning rate is proper, the Garands aren’t fragile.

Added: seating depth of 150gr Hornady’s? I seat to 3.250”. The cannelure of the Hornady is set for the .308. Too deep for the ‘06.

Many, in fact. Check out CMP forum.

Also, remember that commercial cases have greater capacity than mil-spec, and require a larger charge to get equal pressures/velocities.
