I currently shoot a Browning Citori XT for skeet with 1 oz. AA loads. I am thinking of getting a Remington 870 Classic Trap for trap.

If the Citori weighs 8.25 lbs and the 870 weighs 8.0 lbs., could I assume the felt recoil would be similar with identical loads (except #9 for skeet, #8 for trap)?

All else equal, an 8 lb shotgun will recoil a bit more noticeably than an 8.25 lb shotgun.

Trouble is, things aren't equal with this twain.

The balance point on the Citori is a bit further back than on the 870 with its magazine and forearm assembly. This may hold the muzzle down better, and diminished rise there is interpreted as less kick by our brains.

The butt pad on the Classic Trap may be a bit more generous in surface area. This too FEELS like less kick.

And, most folks do better at trap with a muzzle heavy shotgun. Skeet seems to need a slightly faster gun than trap.

A 870 TC,(Older model and not quite the same as the new Classic Trap) is not a vicious kicker with oz loads. Go ahead and see how it works for you. If it doesn't, you can get your money back out of the TC easily.

HTH....

If you can find a 870 Competition model they have a gas assisted cylinder in the magazine tube to reduce recoil. It limits you to single shot pump gun but many who have had bypass surgery are still able to use this gun. The 870 Competiton has more muzzel weight than the regular 870 Trap models. This is one of the lighter recoiling trap guns ever available. It may take a while to find one as they haven't been manufactured for several years but they are worth the wait and parts are still available last time I talked to a Remington rep. at the Grand American.

I think you will find the regular 870 Trap will have more "felt recoil" than your Browning over and under. Using the lower barrel rather than the top on a over and under will even reduce "felt recoil" to a degree.

I have shot the 870 Competition and can attest to it's recoil reducing powers - if recoil is a big issue for you it's a great choice.

What about an auto for reducing recoil??
