Hey everyone, I have a question pertaining to adding an Amendment to my Pistol Permit (I live in the City of Albany). To make a long story short, I just recently (about one month ago) received my pistol permit after about a 4 month wait (not nearly as bad as I had expected!). Anyway, my father (lives in Albany Country) who has had his permit for about two years now, purchased new handgun about one month before I received my permit. He wanted me to co-register the recently purchased pistol in my name so we can equally use the handgun and keep everything legal. On top of this, about two weeks ago I decided to purchase my first handgun. I went to the county building and submitted paperwork for both the co-registration and the new pistol.....and waited.

Late last week, I received a notice in the mail requesting me to appear in court to discuss the recent pistol permit amendments. First, being that I submitted two amendments at once, I am hoping that no red flags were turned on (nothing to worry about here, as my record is completely clean). Second, I am wondering how much longer I will have to wait after I see the judge (pending everything goes okay at the hearing). Will I receive a coupon that day, or is there another waiting game after I see the judge?

Thanks for everyone's help! This forum is very informative and has answered many questions I have had thus far!

Happy Holidays!

I'm not trying to be condescending.
But man am I glad I live in a Free State.
I'm am forever amazed at the hoops some States expect their citizens to jump through, to exercise their rights.

"Thank you, Your Honor, for giving me this opportunity to appeal to Your Highness on bended knee.

"If it may please The Court, I have just one more entreaty to make of Your Majesty:

"The next time we do this, could you heat the hanger?"

wow, I dont' know what to say. Everytime I read one of these posts I am so thankful I don't live somewhere where I have to ask for permission to own a gun. I don't have to ask permission to trade them around among family. But I am looking into where I want to retire and unfortuantely it is a state that has some strict laws. I feel sorry for you. Maybe one day Congress will pass a national gun law that will be simple. Maybe they will bascially say a state can't restrict your right to own a gun but may only regulate the carrying of one.

Hey folks, here's a crazy idea - how about, instead of replying simply to express your dismay at how crazy someone must be to live in a particular place, or how sad you are that the laws have gotten so ridiculous, you just save your breath?

Or, if you really must comment on the state of things, at least make an effort to answer the OP's question in the process. Otherwise, all your post ends up being is worthless noise.

It is kind of ironic that you would make a statement chastising others for not offering an answer to the original question... and then not offer an answer yourself.

At least my post was meant to try and stop people from commenting in not only useless, but negative ways. In other words, I was trying to nip things in the bud and keep things on topic.

How about you? What did you add to the thread?

It didnt work. It is even more ironic that after 2 posts in this thread chastising others for not answering the original question, and then chastising again for not staying on topic, you have not answered the question, nor stayed on topic.

Co-registration is a great idea, especially in the event that one of you become incapacitated for some reason. I live in NYS, and my firearms are listed on both my daughter's and my permits. Likely you will have to wait, even after your interview with the judge.

New York State permits vary largely county-by-county, becoming more restrictive as you get closer to Manhattan. We folks in Orange County have few restrictions regarding concealed carry and obtaining amendments, which usually take about one week. By and large, most of NYS is like that.

Welcome to the forum, BTW, and try to ignore these e-warriors who are convinced of their nobility simply because of the state in which they live. They are deceiving themselves. All it takes is the signatures of a few of their elected officials to change all that---in either direction, depending upon shifts in the political wind.

City of Albany Permit

First, there is no such thing as a "City of Albany Permit" New York State pistol permits are issued by county and this is handled by the county sherriff's office and is valid all over New York EXCEPT New York City Your county Judge has final say and must sign each permit he or she issues (they also have the right to revoke the permit for pretty much anything) and depending on each Judge's view of the hotly contested right to keep and bear arms, they may or may not be very willing to issue those permits. Some county Judges require a personal interview with each applicant before issuing a permit and all future ammendants, some county Judges don't. I think you threw them a curve ball on the co-registraton thing because not too many people do this and he or she just wants to see and talk to you. Not to worry, since you already have a valid NYS pistol permit and a clean record it should be no sweat. Sorry for the long winded post.

Joe

As a resident of NY State, I disagree strongly with Kingpin's assertion that it is a wasted effort for posters to speak about the reality of living in foolish areas of the country. Then again, as a Marylander, I understand his wish to change the subject. The laws of NY, and how they effect law abiding citizens, should be a topic of discussion for everyone around the country. Perhaps people can learn. Here in NY, we hide, telling ourselves it is the same all over. It isn't. You around the nation hide too. Telling yourselves it can't happen to you. It can. Especially if you keep quiet about it, as Kingpin suggests.

Your point is well taken, Whalerman, yet I continue to be amazed at how many folks here think that the answer is to move to another state that is more "gun friendly." Deprivation of liberties does not confine itself to state lines, but presents a threat to all of us. Folks in Pennsylvania and Idaho should be as concerned about the laws in New Jersey and New York as they are of their own.

Sleazer, I'm with you all the way. We have to start working together, and become better informed about what is going on nationwide, even worldwide. I know a lot of NYers who "run" too. If we would reach out, think, prepare and educate ourselves, we could do better. We owe it to our kids. This is not a fight a patriot runs from. Great to hear from you.

me9837,
My original permit was in Albany County about 3 years ago. I never had to go into court, but when I submitted requests for amendments, they make you wait until you receive a piece of snail mail indicating that its ready for you to pick up (if you show up before receiving the mail, they will simply turn you away, even if its sitting there ready). I wanna say it used to take 1 to 2 weeks from the time I submitted the amendment application.

Mr me,
I would very much appreciate you keeping us informed as to the reason for the requested court appearance. Someone may have turned you in for thinking evil thoughts, or perhaps you questioned a teacher's homework assignment. These are actions that can land you in trouble in the Empire State. Please let us know how, or why, this took place.

Update

Just wanted to post an update, (sorry for taking so long) I did meet with the judge and it turned out to be just a formality. Every single time I request an amendment while living in the city of Albany, I will need to see the judge. I was basically asked by the Judge why I was applying for the amendments, after that I was on my way after about 2 minutes of questioning.

Just yesterday I received my letters from the county explaining that I can go pickup my coupon and amendment paperwork. I submitted my paperwork on December 8th, and just received my coupon yesterday. The new gun is excellent!

While this process seems daunting, I really didn’t have much of an issue with the wait. Don’t get me wrong, it was awfully long, but the experiences with the judge and the folks over at the county building weren’t all that bad. Turnaround time was in total 21 days!

Thanks for everyone's help and insight! Greatly appreciated!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Congrats man - its always nice to see new folks around here getting their permits, despite the bureaucracy we have to endure.
What'd ya wind up getting?

Thanks!

Thanks archigos! The most recent purchase was a Sig P238, just loved the feel and look of the pistol! I also have a Springfield .40 XD, and I am going to start the process of co-registering a few other pistols of my fathers.

Since you are in the area, do you know of a place that you could recommend in regards to gun repair? My dad has a older Hi-Standard .22 Military pistol that is in near mint condition, but needs a little work. I believe the spring is bad and from what I have read online, the job is pretty difficult.

Thanks,

Matt

The NY problem lies totally with the Voters. Tell them what you want and if they fail then vote them out. That is how we got CCW in TX. Those who oppossed it got voted out and we got what we wanted.
