Folks, have a quick questions about those black plastic/rubber-ish grips (pachmayr type) used on so many guns, but the ones i'm looking at are for a Sistema 1927 (1911A1).

How do you clean off these things? Normal soap and water? Is there a specific oil/solvent that works well to get them back to a good solid black shade? I ask as these are a decent pair but need a cleaning to get that white-ish color out of the pressed checkering on them.

Thoughts? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have an old Llamma 1911. It has these bakelite hard plastic grips. I use a bar of hand soap and a soft toothbrush. Remove the grips and then you get the bar of soap wet with warm water. Scrape a little soap off with the tothbrush and gently clean the grips. Rinse them in warm water and dry the right away by blotting with a lint free towel.

I have Pachmayr Grips on many of my guns

And I just use a little dish soap and water. If you like them extra sticky, just toss'em in the dishwasher. yet another episode of lessons learned of what not to do brought to you courtesy of my little brother.

I remove them from the pistol and use Windex sprayed on a toothbrush. It leaves them dull black and slightly "tacky". I guess it has no ill effects on the grips as I've been doing it for years on all my Pachmayrs.

Until recently, I had a 1911 with a set of FINGER GROVE Pachmayer grips on it. I always cleaned the grips with a cleaning pad with Hoppe's # 9 on it. I then wiped the cleaner and "other" off and sprayed them with Armor All.

I would try M-Pro 7 gun cleaner myself. It is powerfull "soap" basically and is water soluble. It cleans most anything and rinses clean with hot water.

Thanks for the responses folks, going to attempt a few products on small sections to see what works best, hopefully I get some good results as I also just got a set of gripper pachmayr grips for the T/C Contender as well :D

If I find anything that really gets the grips looking clean and keeping them black instead of faded I'll post an update.

The "Back to Black" really does work wonders. I've even used it on Garmin GPS units I "refurbished" for work, as well as keeping the plastic parts on the car new looking without leaving them slick or sticky.

ps: It works on all colors plastic and rubber.
