CMMG- Are They a Quality Manufacturer?

So, at the guidance of another THR member, I checked out this company. They appear to have some good stuff and at good prices, but I have not heard of them nor have I read about them. I was looking into a LMT or Sabre upper, but if these are good quality, it would save me $200-300.

Any help would be great.

Try www. m4carbine.net. I've not dealt with CMMG,but their customer service reputation leaves a lot to be desired.As far as their reputation on ARs go; you may not find any better.
 
CMMG's quality is supposed to be great, but they take forever to answer e-mails.

hey bro, i would recommend that you go for the CMMG, it tock me about a month looking for a cheap AR, but that's not the problem because there are a lot of good ar for the money, but somehow they didn't meet what i was looking for (perfect color match, 1/7 twist, M4 profile, chome lined and so on...) then there were the other AR like LMT, Colt and a few others but their AR were like you said ($300 or so) more expensive. so i decide to built my own to save me some money, i got a Spike's Tactical lower and a CMMG kit (well not a kit, because i got them from AIM separate) once i got the upper the LPK and the lower, i throw them in my kitchen table and BOOM, all i can say is that i was speechless! the quality, fit and finish were awesome! just like any other highend AR

so if you are looking just for an upper or a kid even a complete rifle, go for it because they are great.

note: ohh and the M4 upper with 1/7 shoot 55gr wolf all day (at less mine does)





 
When I built my 9mm carbine, I wanted to know if they would ship to CA (many don't.) You know, I called & the owner of the company picked up the phone & answered all my questions -- you can't beat that! I have 3k rounds through my 9mm carbine :cool: I have ZERO complaints w/ my CMMG! :D
 
well, LMT IS better, but CMMG is fine quality. if you're looking to save some money go with cmmg. you'll be sacrificing very little as far the rifle is concerned.
 
Robusto, you are doing the right thing, researching before you buy.

My first CMMG kaboomed on Radway Green ammo. The ammo importer paid for a new replacement rifle, but it took almost nine months to get it.

The replacement rifle's gas key doesn't look like it's properly staked to me, and the castle nut wasn't properly staked either and it is loose.

I was looking at another website a week or so ago and someone had a table which listed which manufacturers followed mil-spec and where their rifles varied from spec.

I'm seriously considering sending it to a good gunsmith, who knows AR's, to give it a good going over.

I also have a Colt and it doesn't have these problems. Good luck. Patrick
 
I have 3 CMMG M4's (until I give 2 of them away at Christmas anyway). All 3 are fine rifles. They were their Bargin Bin rifles. Once I got them BZO'd - I (or anyone else who has fired them) don't have any problems hitting a 12" steel Pig at 250 yrds every time I pull the trigger. Round count is at about 500 rounds per rifle right now (I know a tear drop in the ocean).

Look - I also have a Colt 20" HBAR and a 16" LW CAR15 I built from a Model 1 Sales kit. The Colt is a Colt and its great. It also cost a freaking fortune back in the bad old Brady Ban days when I bought it. The Model One kit rifle is just a kit rifle that cost me $500.00 to assemble. I've shot both roughly the same amount and neither has KABOOMED or even hichuped. I'd have to dig out my range book for both, but I know the CAR just went over 4000rounds last weekend. I know they are 2 different rifles as far as quality goes. But results are results and I'm not about to put the investment forward to shoot ammo thru them both until one breaks and then declare the other superior. I shoot them when I want to shoot them, if something breaks I'll replace it.

The Marine Corps issued me rifles to use in extended combat situations. My personal rifles won't ever be subjected to that kind of enviroment. I doubt anyones personal rifles will be... but if it makes you feel better to know you've got a Colt then fine spend the $$$ and be secure in your knowledge you've got the best $$$ can buy.

On the other hand everyone has a bad mfg day and can sell a POS, even Colt. You can't base everything off of one rifle, if you could Model One Sales would be getting over run with calls right now based on my CAR.

CMMG makes a quality prouduct. Thousands of guys on THR, M4 and AR.com have them and very few of us have any problems.

Buy the best you can afford and deal with it, good or bad. If its good be happy your in the majority of CMMG rifle owners. If it's bad make them fix it until it's good.

I'm not trying to slam CMMG, I just think the OP should read up on AR-15's and then he or she can make an informed decision based on their needs and budget. Learning about the rifle might also help the new owner check for any potiential problems, no matter what brand they happen to get.

The first rifle I had I was happy with, and like I said the ammo company paid for a new rifle, so I don't blame CMMG for it KBing, just the long wait to get the replacement.Patrick
 
In my quest to build a 20" Govt spec rifle, I settled on a CMMG upper since LMT doesn't make one.

The first one they sent me had issues. It over expanded the brass just forward of the case head, and it exhibited poor accuracy. It did cycle fine, but it wasn't right.

I sent it back. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but they sent me an entirely new upper, which appears to be perfect.

When it comes to a "custom made upper" (something that isn't straight off the shelf), I would likely use them above anyone else. For an off the shelf 10.5, 14.5, or 16", I would still go with LMT.

You can't exactly go to their website and see where all of their parts come from. You can't call them and ask them if they make good ARs as the answer will always be yes.

Knowing everything there is to know about the function of an AR and which parts are good doesn't tell you which manufacturer uses good parts.

That is something very important. If they make it right when it isn't, they are a good company.

I have only bought magazines from them, but the guy seemed very nice on the phone ;).
 
I bought one of their bargain bin M4geries this spring, and it is great. Has not had a malfunction yet, so far I have only fed it about 300 rounds of Wolf 62 grain, 130-140 rounds of Remington 55 grain, and 150ish rounds of GA 68 grain HP, but it has run perfectly. I still haven't gotten it zeroed, but I will.

The finish on it is flawless except for one little marking that looks like a fingernail was pressed into the receiver on the magwell, they had a disclaimer stating that the finish of all the rifles are not guarunteed. Mine is good looking and functions perfectly.

I really like how everyone here is very helpful and honest, but doesn't slam products even if they had a bad one. I am doing a lot of research because I don't have a lot of cash to spend, but would rather spend a bit more up front and get something good, than cheap out up front and have it cost me more int he long run.

I like things that are nice, but also that can "take a licking and keep on ticking" if ya follow.

Nothing against Bushmaster; I owned two of them that functioned just fine (including an HBAR that was quite accurate), but in my opinion the materials and construction of the CMMG units are better. I don't know what was wrong with my first one, but based on their reputation I'll assume its an exception.

This is the rifle I've used the upper on:

-LMT A2 stocked lower
-LMT M16 BCG and charging handle
-TA31RCO-A4
-LT100 (one of the non mispec parts)
-RRA ambi selector (another non-milspec part)
CMMG govt spec upper including the proper barrel (profile, material, twist, chamber, and chrome lining are all correct) F marked FSB correct for the flat top. The only non-milspec feature on the upper that I'm aware of is the fact that it has M4 feed ramps, and I don't think the FN contract weapons do.

So, its not perfect, but its pretty close, and CMMG is, at this time, the only source for that upper that I'm aware of.
