Anybody in the Coast gaurd Auxillary. I Am in the process of joining A flottilla in San Jose.

What are legally allowed to do. These guys do mostly boater safety. But they said they do recue stuff as well. Anybody with inside scoop?

Are there any weapons allowed?

Here in S Florida the Aux is just a civilian group that helps stranded boaters and does some patroling as a set of eyes.

The have no legal authority and can use no weapons under the CG or CG aux banner.

In the past there was some training using the CG helicoptors, but that seemed to stop after 9/11.

My dad was a coastie for years.

They teach boating safety, navigation and basic engine courses which usualy help reduce boat insurance premiums.

Sounds like a boating club. I wouldn't pump yourself to board any oil tankers with an MP5 or anything.

I have done all that high sped low drag stuff. this is just away to help out, it does not effect my retirement from the Army, And they have boats. I like boats.

As far as I can see, no down side. I got more info today. they also have an air wing. Kinda like the civil air protrol.

It looks like fun to me... Oh yeah, As far as boarding ships with an MP-5, I have hit more doors than an Avon lady in my life. No thrill for me stud.

SGT. The CG Aux is a great outfit to be in if you like to help other boaters. Plus the have a number of great courses which will make you a safer boater. They have no law enforcement powers. I was Operations Officer which had to get Boats and people to patrol on weekends from 2Pm to 6pm. We patroled an area in Buzzards Bay Mass and helped a great number of boaters who were in trouble. Dont plan on hitting any doors but when your out in 6 foot seas getting slammed around trying to help someone out it is a great feeling after they are safe ashore.

I like boats too. I was in the CG Aux for a few years on inland lakes around the Dallas/Ft Worth area. It's fun, met lots of boaters, conducted volunteer safety inspections and ate lots of free burgers and BBQ.

Do it :D

Im going to do it. I met with some of the people. Nice people. And they even have couple of Jetski-doos to patrol the delta. Threaten me with a good time.

Most the guys are boat owners, one guy has a house boat. I might be able to convince my wife we need one as well.

Our first outing, for me, is safety inspections on the coyote lake res. On the 5th of next month. Tri-tip And burgers. MUCH more fun then being an 11bush. At this point in my life.
