I got this colt a few months back and thanks to you guys I found out it is a pretty sweet piece.

Since these are original real MOP grips, it Looks like I will be taking the pearl grips off before I shoot it. Are all Detective grips interchangeable? What is the best way to make sure I get grips that fit to replace these?

Removing the peral stocks when you are using the revolver is an excellent idea.

However when your Detective Special was made the stocks were individually hand fitted to each frame. Therefore while it may happen, don't expect the replacements to be a perfect fit.

And no, not all Detective Special stocks are the same. Over time they're were 3 basic styles, of which yours is the 2nd.

For "shootings stocks," go to the source listed in post #2, or www.gunpartscorp.com

In both cases be sure to order a matching screw and nut, which may be different then the original ones.

Be sure that those Pachmayr stocks weren't made for the later Detective Special models that had a short frame where the stocks were extended and wrapped around the bottom of the frame.

Only the pair that's on my '70' Detective. Fit is very comfortable to me, but I've never shot one with grips similar to yours. I do have the plastic pearls on my Colt Scout which looks great against the black frame, but I don't care for the slippery feel even with the .22's recoil.

I may have some NOS aftermarket wood grips that fit that gun.
I you find them and want to sell let me know

Also, I found these on gunbroker that I like. I am assuming not because mine gun Is so old (made 1933). Does anyone know if they will fit? They are described as

"New In Wrapper Colt Sile Dectective Sprecial, Diamondback, Cobra Walnut Grips. Made in Italy by Sile and include Grip Screw"

Unfortunately both the Pachmayr and SILE stocks won't fit. You need stocks made for Detective Special revolvers made before 1972, which are sometimes called "full frame," or "long frame," in respect to the length of the handle. The original ones were usually plastic or chekered walnut - the latter being hard to find. But replacements are out there on E-Bay or Gunbroker.com. Sources for plastic and some wood have been listed in earlier posts. Just be careful to specify pre-1972 model.
