Watch......Colts will start being made in China or Taiwan.

Not to highjack the thead, but for those whining about manufacturing jobs going overseas, thank your greedy local labor unions, the AFL-CIO, Big Labor Whore Democrats and other socialist who would rather you get a govt. hand-out than to see you have a decent job. :banghead: The labor unions are the socialists' useful idiots.

As for not seeing many new Colt products, since the mid 90s Colt has been more or less a private govt. arsenal catering to govt./LE sales. A move that probably was a corporate survival tactic resulting from the frivolous lawsuit craze by cities and municipalities.

I'd be interested in knowing what police have been buying Colts lately. I haven't seen a Colt handgun on a cop for as long as I can remember, and the rifle sales I see are going to other companies just like consumer sales.

i just thought they were feeding m-16 to mil and thats it .. i have to retract on statment i made i did see a new colt today must have been the 1300$$ price tag made me forget gun shop as 2 new phtons... but still ahvent seen a 1911 or SSA or a rifle since then ...

I have not seen a Colt anywhere that I could buy one in many years.

I don't know where you've been looking. I finished lunch early today, so I walked through Marburgers Sporting Goods, in Kemah, TX. They had new Colt's handguns, and a new Colt's AR15 for sale.

So, who is responsible for jobs going overseas?

George Bush?

Or maybe the UAW?

I was a machinist from 1974 to 1984. Never worked in a union shop once. I didn't like the idea of working in an environment where the only criteria for advancement was seniority. If you are young and talented and motivated, the union structure is a hell of a handicap.

As Colt's can tell you.

I am not sure they could move out of Conn. Does not the state pension board, or something like that, still own a lot of the company after bailing them out a few years ago?

The State of Conn. owns the name Colt. They kept it in bankrupty, so it doesn't go overseas.
Unions are not the reason that jobs are going to Mexico at $1.57/hr or Brazil at $65/month, or China at .40 cents per hour.
It is the greedy Presidents of those companies that are making 20 to 300 MILLION a year!!! They get bonuses on their salaries depending on the profit, so if they can move it to a cheaper place, they make more money for themselves, and hell with the workers and their families!!!!
My question is if all the manufacturing is going overseas, how are we going to defend ourselves, when they cut out their gun and ammo exports to us?

I do not expect it to last long since they mostly serve the military and LE.

You know, I had a guy behind the gun counter at Academy (sporting goods store) tell me that Colt doesn't sell to anyone besides LE and Military. Besides being dead wrong (the Oshman's a mile away has plenty, and I told him so), it made me wonder about people who believe this. Which branch of the Military or what LE department do they think is issuing Colt SAAs?

In my little burg of 25,000 I frequent 5 different proprietors dealing in firearms.

I have yet to see a new or used Colt in any store. It could be that they are sold before I make my weekly or bi-weekly rounds. Some of the "unique" pieces do move quickly. I also must admit that I have not asked concerning Colt availability.

Wow... here in the PRM, I've seen both used and, if I'm not mistaken, NEW Colt 1911-type handguns. Atlantic Guns in Rockville has no less than 5. Prices are pretty high, but this IS Maryland.

I purchased one of the New Series 70's last August: It had to have been made in late 02, since Maryland's ILS law begins with anything made after Dec 31, 02. Which makes the above paragraph a little clearer.

Yeah!

We sure as hell don't want American workers earning a higher standard of living than South Korean or Chinese workers. It might depress profits too far and then management might lose their bonuses. </sarcasm>

If you're looking for someone to blame, I suggest the members of both political parties who favor 'free trade' with nations that have virtual slave labor.

They're responsible for the rush to the bottom.

greg531 and glocksman are right

Something that I have learned recently is that the people who sit on the board of directors of American companies make tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Also, it is not just 10 or 12 people who sit on the boards, it is dozens. A lot of people are just there for name recognition, no real job. So instead of trimming fat where it really is, at the top, they lay off the American worker and run overseas. In many cases, corporate executives and polititions are the same people.

BTW, I am NO fan of unions. I look at them like lawyers, if you need one, you better have one; if you don't, run away.

Lots and lots of years ago I had a Summer job at Pontiac Motor Division, GMC-----the inside joke there was that UAW stood for United Against Workers. At the time, the President of UAW was Leonard Woodcock, who everyone just referred to as "Oakdick"----serioiusly!

Back to the subject at hand, the reason so many jobs are heading overseas is becaue of costs, over regulation, litigataion and excessive taxation----and who do the American people complain to and expect to solve the 'problem'----the politicians-----who are the ones who gave us the problem in the first place. There is nothing wrong with either American business or American workers----and if the government would just stay off of the backs of both----everything will be just fine.

Well said. There is no political party you can blame for this. There were WAY too many members on BOTH sides that were for NAFTA, including both presidential candidates at the time. When is America gonna get FAIR TRADE NOT FREE TRADE!!!?

I have been a UAW member for 26 years, but most times the union merely ticks me off with it's coddling of the slugs, while the honest hard worker gets little or no recognition. In fact, since the honest worker needs little from the UAW, when a legitimate grievance does appear, your committeeman doesn't even know your name!

I'll vote for ChairborneRanger for Senate or even Prezident. Besides, we know he's pro-2A.

My heart grows warmer. I expected a full-court press on the union thing. So far I have been very disappointed. I was very anti-union, and still am, but now I know I can trust the union rank and file :)

Speaking as an ex-Steward, I can tell you that I had my share of 'problem cases' whose names I knew quite well. :D

However, I also had a few people who genuinely were getting screwed over by the company.

The way I looked at it was that by protecting the rights of the 'problem cases', I was protecting my rights and the rights of my co-workers as well.

A good analogy would be the Bill of Rights provisions dealing with criminals and criminal cases. Honest people probably will never make use of those rights, but if for some reason an honest man does get involved in a situation where the rights are needed, he'll be damned glad he can exercise the 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments.

Actually, there are three parts to the loss of jobs in America. They are Labor, Management, and Government. All three are equally arrogant, ignorant, lazy, stupid, greedy,short-sighted, and self serving. Please don't single one out for all the blame. There's plenty for all three.

7.62, If you want to make the trip to Vegas, my local store has a full line of Colt 1911s in stock. They don't keep SAAs in stock but the store down the street does.
