Colt Python Serial Number

My Python's serial number is 04721E. Can anyone tell me when this was made? And what it may be worth? It is in mint condition and fired only 5 times.

1)Your Python was made in 1975. The serial number range for 1975, was from 01001E through 15000E.

2)If in mint condition, I would estimate the value of your python to be between $950 and $1,300-depending upon what part of the Country that you are in? However, since colt is no longer producing any revolvers, Colt prices have been going through the roof! In view of this, you will be able to get whatever price that the market will bear, for the condition(And the completeness)of your Python!:what:
 
Thank you Slick. I am in the Tampa Bay area in Florida and I just bought this from a gun show yesterday. What do you mean by completeness? What is suppose to come with these?

Your value would be not only based on location, but more so on the barrel length & finish of the gun.
Is it 2.5, 4, or 6 inch. Is it Blue or Nickel. Does it have it's original woodgrain box ? Does it have it's original paperwork ?
Are the grips factory wood target style grips, or in the case of the 2.5 inch barrel it would most likely have the factory wood service grips.
All of this factors into the value of the gun.

Also on a side note, Colt still today is producing revolvers, just NOT any double action wheels such as the Python, King Cobra or Anaconda.

The King Cobra has been discontinued. ALong with a lot of other great revolvers.

The Anaconda production is "suspended". :rolleyes:

And the Python Elite is still available through the Custom Shop.
Where, of course, all of the SAAs are produced also.

Actually Colt's is looking more and more like a custom shop instead of a real gun company.
Very few of it's guns are NOT made in the custom shop.

I really hope they're going to do start producing their "improved" Double Action 1911.
It would be nice to see Colt's pull it's corporate head out from between it's corporate buttocks and get back into "The Show".

Thanks for your input. It is a 6in, Blue finish (also there are no marks , scratches anywhere as far as i can see.) I do not have a box nor any paperwork and the grips are the factory wood.

Is there places I can get a original box and paperwork?

Colt no longer produces ANY double action revolvers.
The Custom Shop is no longer building the Python AT ALL, and has stated that the Python will never be produced again.

The Anaconda is not "suspended" it's discontinued.

Here's a link to a report by a 1911 forum member who was given a guided tour of the Colt plant early this year.
The production scheduling manager who's also a 1911 forum member gave the tour and discussed the status of Colt in general and DA revolvers in particular:

Since this, further details have made it clear that Colt is out of the DA revolver business, probably for good, and that due to the difficulties of producing the Python, it's gone forever.

While I'm the first to "Never say never" about Colt, it's clear that they will be offering no DA revolvers, probably permanently.
 
dfariswheel, I surely do not wish to ever debate anything Colt with you. You are THE resident expert. All I know is what I am told by a couple of people who work inside that building.

The Colt website is still advertising Custom Shop Pythons.

And the very article you linked says;
Mark made it clear that at least in the short term, double action revolvers (Anaconda, King Cobra, Python, Detective Special etc.) were not being produced, and if they ever were to become available again, they would be made in such a way as to take advantage of advances in manufacturing technology.

The area where the double action revolvers had been built is cleared out now to make room for future expansion, again this not to say that the revolvers will never be back, but looking at the factory floor it is apparent that it won’t be anytime soon.

And that pretty much agrees with things I have been told.
 
All I know is, several people recently contacted Colt to ask about a Custom Gunshop assembled Python, and were told they no longer have any frames and cannot build them anymore.

When asked why the Python was still listed as a Custom Shop item, they were told that Colt doesn't update their web site very often or spend much time doing so.

Again, "Never say never" with Colt, but as for a DA revolver, I'd wouldn't hold my breath.

This one is a six-inch stainless that I got in 1999 for $500. Since I shoot all of my guns, it isn't NIB any more, but I do have the box.

The only place I know of to get the cardboard Colt boxes is on Ebay, and there it's luck of the draw.
In other words, you just have to keep looking until hopefully, someone will auction a box of an appropriate type for your gun.

By 1999, Colt was using the blue plastic box, so these are fairly easy to find.

So my decision to but an Anconda and King Cobra the other day was a correct decision as they are no longer in production. If so then I better go see if that fellow (non gun person)stillwants to sell that Python he took in trade for some coins.

PY1959 was made after 1985.
The publicly available Colt numbers only go up to 1985 and to get a production date for guns made after that, you have to call the Colt factory.

Call during normal business hours and they will tell you the date made.
Sorry, this may be tough to do from where you are, so you might try sending a letter with a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and they will likely send you the answer.
