IIRC this is redundant. Columbus already had a local AWB. In addition, the STATE of Ohio also has the >31 round mag=Machine Gun law on the books.
I'm not defending this nonsense, but it's nothing new here in the Great Buckeye State.
This is their third attempt. Courts slapped down the first two on grounds of the city council writes poorly-worded laws and has no clue whatsoever about guns. Alas, they didn't slap them down on the much simpler grounds of being unconstitutional.
Points:
1. I'm really certain that someone who is about to kill someone is going to pause, look at his weapon, and realize "Dangit. This gun has two evil features. I could get a
first degree misdemeanor with no mandatory jail time on top of my two or three felonies. Holy crap, that was close. Let me put this back."
2. "It's about limiting the availability of those guns." Really? Is it now? Howso? "Well, gunshops in the city can't sell them." Really? Name me one gunshop inside the city limits. Think hard. Zanes Gun Rack? Closed. Vances? Clinton Township. Aumiller? Westerville. That's right, councilman, thanks to your earlier inane purchase permit law, pretty near every gunshop has either closed or moved the the townships or suburbs, where your silly little law does not apply. And lookit, gun crime didn't exactly decrease, now did it?
Maybe if they actually started putting money into corrections and the courts they could actually...you know...convict people, and put them away. but that costs money. This? This sounds like you're doing something, and it's pretty-near free.
