Do any of you have experience with the Romanian AK-74s being sold by Aim Surpus? Are they good values or junk?

Thanks,

Drakejake

I'm also interested if anyone has GOOD experiances with them.
Nomad has a thread that sure makes me want to stay away.

But at that price...

So are these the same, better or worse? If not these which is the right one to get in this caliber?

I have one that I bought back in March. I bought it because it is cheap, mags are cheap, and ammo is cheap [for the time being].

I took it out to the range a couple weeks ago for its first time out. No problems at all. The only problem was that the ammo smelled terrible. But you'll get over that.

The finish on these leave a little something to be desired. But what to you expect from an AK variant cobbled together in Romania?

Here are some pictures of my WASR-2

And then I bought a Russian Kobra red-dot sight for it.

My plans for it include the following:
Duracoat in matte black
new K-Var handguards and NATO length buttstock
More mags and Ammo

If you buy a 5.45x39 AK you must check out this deal:

Ohio Rapid Fire is selling 12 Bulgarian AK-74 Magazines for $47.99

I have not fired the new Romanian AK,s but I have examined several and I have owned 2 older Romainian SAR's. They were both completely trouble free except for a small degree of trigger slap, which is about a 10 minute parts replacement.
Both rifles shot very well, were very well made, solid and of course, reliable.
I have no problem with a military type finish on what is a military type weapon...scratches can be covered using cold blue, just don't polish it after application.

I have heard lots of horror stories about these guns. I have seen quite a few of them in person, and I have never seen a bad one.
I really liked my Romanian AK's, and kept one as my bedside rifle for several years.
FWIW, I paid more for my used SAR's than they are asking for the new ones.
I used the used Soviet Bloc mags from CDNN, had about ten, never had any problem with them, either.
(Sold my AK to buy a FAL.)

Okay, I guess I have some good and bad on mine. Mine had the mag well machined out a bit too much. The bakelite mag it came with would wobble so much it wouldn't feed reliably. Also, it sounds like there is a gravel bed under the bolt when it cycles. When you manually cycle it, you can sort of feel the rough spots as the bolt comes back. You might be able to improve that. On the outside, it had some sharp edges in places that needed a little file work to make it more comfortable to shoot.

On the good side, it is accurate, lightweight, handy, and now very reliable. It didn't have any trigger slap or front sight canting like stories I have heard. I can actually make decent groups with it once a hammer is used to adjust the front sight. The sights are pretty rough.
On the mag wobble, I have found that the thicker black polymer coated magazines that have a soft polymer coating seem to work just fine and fit tight. I have a Polish Tantal with the opposite problem as it's mag well is very tight. I just save my bakelite mags for it and use the thicker mags for the WASR. Things have worked out nicely.

Ohio Rapid Fire (do a Yahoo search) used to sell a 12 pack of mags for a reasonably cheap price. They were mostly all the black polymer coated mags that work well in my WASR. Haven't looked in a while, but occasionally someone will have the bakelite mags on sale. I have plenty now, but more is better.

One thing to add. It came with the side mount on the receiver. The scope mount I had already will not fit on it. I am not yet sure it is a bad mount or just needs some more file work.

I conclude from the comments that the Century assembled WASR-2s are similar to their FALs and Cetmes: quality control is poor and you never know what you are getting. If this is true, the best option might be to buy a gun with a known record for good performance, which is available for examination before purchase, and which has some kind of guarantee. Hard to do, perhaps, but the wisest course. Yes, yes?

Century doesn't make these rifles. They import them from Romania and install the correct number of US parts.

If you have the opportunity to examine the rifle in person, I would recommend that approach.

Thaks, guys, I was/am looking at a Russian-made VSPR in that caliber for ~$600. For that I could damn near buy two of the AIM rifles + some ammo. Have to rethink my statigerie.
