I just want to compare the major and minor differences between the Springfield XD 9 Service and the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm. I know both are excellent firearms and will get the job done, but what are some differences?

Some of the obvious things I've found is that the XD9 has the loaded chamber indicator, cocking indicator, and grip safety; it also comes with a holster, magazine "holster", and speed loader. The M&P has a lower bore axis, longer sight radius, and interchangable backstraps; also two extra magazines are available along with a range bag if bought before july 15th.

So what else?

I believe the M&P has a 17 round mag compared to the XD's 16. The included holster is good for casual use but not for duty or carry. The M&P mags are a little on the expensive side, $40 give or take, so the 2 free mag deal is very worthwhile. I own an XD 9 and think it is great. Haven't had the chance to shoot an M&P, though I loved the way it felt. It "points" just as well as the XD, at least for me.

The M&P is not double action... it's striker fired... consistent trigger pull for every shot. And with about 250-300 rounds through it, the factory fresh trigger grittiness gives way to a really nice, smooth trigger pull.

The "factory fresh grittiness" is not a given my the way. The M&Ps I have handled, both of mine included, came with very nice triggers. The XD will probably have a slightly crisper trigger pull but the M&P fits my hand much better and it a world more accurate in my hands.

Does either have a slight accuracy advantage?

Neither are a compact design, but is one any easier to carry and conceal than the other?

Both are decent guns. I have fired both and personally would not buy either one, however. But, nothing wrong with them. Just not my thing.

I think the Walther p99 A/S is better. Also prefer the HK USP.

Of the two, I like the M&P a lot better.. lower bore axis (less top heavy), feels better in the hand, and -not sure on this- better capacity. That said, due to the mag drop problems I've had with mine (been through 4 mag catches and two trips back to S&W - there now in fact) and many others have had, I'm not able to give a green light recommendation on the M&P. I'd give S&W another year and see if they've licked the mag drop problem before giving full green light on the gun. Many M&P owners haven't experienced the mag drop problem but it can be guestimated (from the M&P forum) that up to as many as 18-20% of owners have! That's not a good thing. Like I said, S&W has tried four mag catches on my M&P, able to stop the mag drop problem only for a few hundred rounds each time. The gun is back with them as of this writing for a second trip. I'm hoping they replace the frame this time. While they have been awesome in responding to the problems, they don't seem to have figured out the cause as yet. Many guns are afflicted with this issue. Visit the mp-pistol.com forum for more details.

Do check out the USP Compact... superb gun and can be carried cocked and locked like a 1911 (very nice if you are accustomed to the 1911 as many of us are.) And don't overlook Glock's awesome 23... it doesn't feel quite as nice in the hand and the trigger isn't as nice as the M&P, but the gun has a 14 round capacity, is quite compact, stone reliable, tough as nails... something you (like countless others) can definitely rely on. Aftermarket support in parts, accessories, and services for Glocks is remarkable. IAfter installing a 3.5# connector and smooth-faced trigger, the guns became much more enjoyable to shoot than stock. I wasn't too enamored with them when I first bought and shot them, but with time and experience have found that one can grow to really appreciate Glocks... now I have a 29, 30 19, and 23. The 19 and 23 are close to the ideal carry guns... size, weight, capacity, reliability, simplicity... tough to beat.

If you are into "tricking" one out, the XD has super gunsmiths known for their expertise in that arena. Since the M&P is fairly new to the public, I haven't heard or seen any advertising regarding trigger jobs, sights, porting, extended mag release buttons, etc, if one is thinking of the shooting sports. I can tell you I'm seeing and hearing positive comments on the stock model M&P for USPSA competition shooting.

I think the 18-20% having mag drop problems is WAY high. Most people who don't have problems never speak up, but those that do will complain at a much higher rate. From what I gathered from the M&P Pistol Forum is that the issue was with earlier models and has been resolved in the current ones. I have two M&Ps and have had 0 problems and my compact is my daily carry gun.

The XD is made in Croatia and the M&P is made in the USA, if that sort of thing matters to you.

Funny you should post that comment. I did consider that point when looking at both brands. But, in my case, I had a bad experience with S&W, so "they" made the decision for me. I bought the XD and it has been flawless. I use it for competition shooting. Thanks S&W. :neener:

Both pistols are great guns.

I chose the M&P, twice. Full size 9 and Compact 9.

But I will add an XD one day. I have shot a friend's bi-tone XD9 and it is very nice.

Dan Burwell. His name is all over the M&P forum.

His trigger job is supposedly comparable to the break of a good 1911 trigger.:eek::D

My wife's M&P 9 fullsize is rediculously easy to shoot fast and accurately. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for competition. In fact, one day at the range a proud Glock owner volunteered to try out my M&P if I could try his Glock 23. His groups were MUCH smaller with the M&P. I could tell he was a little sick about how much better he shot with the M&P over his Glock. The Glock had a crisper trigger pull but wasn't nearly as accurate, for me anyhow (or him either).

Ditto Dan Burwell. Very acceptable work.

I've heard the M&P trigger is more amenable to tweaking than the XD trigger, but I don't know exactly why. A tweaked M&P trigger is waaaaaaaaay better, IMO, than a tweaked Glock trigger.
