Competition Shooting in VT/NH??

I'm new to this forum and have some questions for everyone.

I live in Central VT, on the border of NH and was wondering if their is any competition shooting around?? I am looking to get started in this and was wondering what pistol I should start with, class, equipment, and so on.
My two sons (21), and my brother-in-law are also interested as well.

Any information would be great!

Oddly, no clubs in VT.

There used to be some competitive shooting at a range between Derby and Derby Line, Vt, but it's been a while.

A lot of the people were in the Border Patrol. You could check with them.

Welcome to The High Road, I too live in Central Vermont, Windsor County near Reading to be more specific (about 20mins from Claremont, NH. I have never been able to find anywhere in Vermont to shoot comp, although their are plenty of gun clubs and ranges n' whatnot. I don't belong to any ranges, as I have enough land and privacy to shoot anytime day or night.

Sometimes me and a few friends will have a small, very unofficial friendly comp, its nothing real fancy or anything.
I see that you were inquiring about what would be a good first range gun/ comp gun.
I must say, provided it is comfortable in your hand, a Glock 17 would be a great all-around Range/Comp/SD/HD gun as they are known for their ruggedness and reliability, very decent accuracy, at least enough that it has been a top competitor in the USPSA for many many years, and they are pretty inexpensive compared to other guns and what you end up paying for IMO.

I would also be just as confident in recommending a Glock 34 as it is similar to the G17 but has a longer barrel for better accuracy, maybe 4-5 17rd factory magazines, 2-3 33rd factory mags, a nice Glock duty holster for the range as they are inexpensive, Maybe a GTL(Glock tactical light) for home defense, and that's really about it for basics, and you'd have yourself a very nice all-around set-up.
If I had known what I know now when I first started buying guns, glock would have been my first choice, so I am speaking from years of experience, although I am no expert marksman, I just know Glocks to be the most rugged, versatile, reliable, accurate, simplistic, guns around.
I have grown to really love them and their ease of maintenance, cleaning, operation. I recommend Glocks to anyone who's asking.

There is a test where 100,000rds were fired consecutively through a glock with no maintenance to the gun during the test and not 1 single malfunction occurred, to me there is something to be said for any gun that can do that, although I have never heard of any other gun holding up as well as a Glock.
I currently own 4 now and have no regrets, I have to say though, I really have a soft spot for the Glock 17. Hope this helped

Caladonia field & stream in St Johnsbury VT

The 2Nd and 4Th Wed of each month is Bulls eye. The last sat of every month is military high power. They can be found on the web. Derby Line VT used to hold PPC matches and they where posted in American Riflemen. I used to shoot there but way to much ego walking around having hissy fits about about small stuff during the match. It was to distracting for some of us to bother going back.

And except for Pemi, those are all closer to Maine and Massachusetts than to Vermont. It would be 2+ hours to get there from Lebanon, NH I believe.

There is an informal pistol league at Cheshire County Fish and Game outside Keene, NH. They don't turn anybody away that I've ever seen. It's a lot of fun and pretty relaxed, they run on an IDPA-type format but are not affliated or anything. I shoot with them occasionally, but they usually interfer with my Highpower schedule.

I feel lucky, I only have to go about an hour and 15 minutes to get to the closest 600-yard Highpower range.

It's true what they say here in New England though, "You can't get theya from heya" half the time. One of the top signs you're in the North Country, you try to travel east-west, only to find you can't!

Yup! I lived and played in the area for several years and it can be an adventure getting accross. Never got to shoot up there, though.

I hear ME puts on a great State match, though. If things ease up some year, I'll have to get back up that way.

If you're looking for SASS type competition, there's the Dalton Boys in Dalton, NH; which is about three seconds over the VT/NH state line.

The Caledonia Field & Stream club that crossrhodes mentioned also hosts an occasional SASS match, but I don't have a schedule handy so I couldn't tell you when.

What's nice about Caledonia is the membership is $40 per year, you get a key to the gate, it has nice covered firing lines and a head that is open year round and it's plowed in the winter. No rift raft or garbage cluttering the area.
