Concealed carry and semi-autos with rails.

I'm just curious about concealed carry and illumination. Does anyone here CC a semi-auto with a rail, and if so, do you also carry a weapon light or light/laser combination to snap on if needed? Are you of the opinion that pistols ideally suited for concealed carry don't have rails?

I mostly carry an M&P9c which does have a rail.

I don't carry a rail-light or laser at any time.

I do carry a handheld LED flashlight, which so far is used 100% of the time for other things, but would work just fine as an investigation/aiming light if need be, using any one of several flashlight techniques developed before mounted lights became common.

I don't think the presence or absence of a rail matters much on a CCW pistol, unless you are definitely going to use the rail. I don't think most CCW defensive scenarios would provide time and reason to install a separate light onto the pistol - if you have that much time, you're probably going to be leaving the area or calling 911.

BTW, why do you have a signature line quote from the future? (April 14, 2011)

    Good points ... thanks.

    .... and a good catch ... fixed!

I carry a 3rd gen Glock 19, which has rails, but I don't carry with anything on the rails.

If I did want a gun-mounted light for CCW, I'd get a holster that let me carry with light attached (eg a Comptac CTAC)--trying to attach a light to a gun while under pressure in an SD situation is just asking for trouble.

I do carry a handheld light daily, and would still do so even if I carried with a weapon-mounted light attached to my sidearm.

I have a Sig GSR with rail, and a mounted light, but it's one of the "house" guns (bedroom). It's just too bulky to CC, and if you get in a gunfight, you're probably going to be better served having practiced point shooting, and not fooling with a weapon mounted light. But that's why God gave us opinions, to share with others.

I have a Sig 220R, and the rails have snagged a few times - at least enough times that I won't use it for carry anymore. YMMV though...

If a rail is unobtrusive and doesn't have excessively protruding knife edges and saw teeth, I can live with it. The ones found on "3rd generation" Glocks are examples of this.
