I've decided that I am going to get a Springfield XD as my first pistol. This will be my only pistol (for at least a long while). I want to use it for home defense, self defense while camping or traveling, and occasionally as my concealed carry weapon. I have decided to go with a .45. I love the look and feel of the 5" tactical but it is quite big for concealed carry.

Convince me of how large of an XD I should get.

Hrm, by limiting yourself to one caliber you're kinda limiting the choices an awful lot.

I'd go subcompact in any case though, because carrying anything bigger than that can be problematic. And frankly if your "hands hurt" after shooting any subcompact or above sized semi-auto for a practice session of about two hundred rounds ... I'd recommend the gym. 8)

"hands hurt"?
Didn't say that. I said that it's quite big for concealed carry.

Back on topic,
carrying anything bigger than that can be problematic
What problems other than discomfort and printing on your clothing?

i love my xd 45acp tactical but do have it listed here for trade for a 4 in model

does not look like a sc45acp will be out anytime soon

this one is the go to gun for house holds a light good, my Daily carry is a xdsc40

It's too long! (Pun intended)

Mainly barrel length, I find. It stick out from under my shirts unless I wear my pants around my bellybutton.

For CCW, get the 3" version. The others will be too uncomfortable. You can use that for both home defense and CCW until you can afford a dedicated home defense 5" model. Not gonna work vise-versa.

Since this is your first pistol you have no clue about what its like to carry a full sized handgun concealed. I carry a 5" 1911 most of the year, But thats only possible since its so thin.
In the summer i carry an XD subcompact 3" .40 and if i want full sized capacity at home with it the spare high capacity mag it comes with works great.

Have you even shot a .45acp? In a 1911 it can be a handful. In a compact it can be too much for many people. Its still my round of choice, But for concealability the .40 is a great compromise for me.

For your first pistol I would not try to do it all with one. It is a good idea to learn to shoot a pistol, and overcome bad habits that could take years of practice to overcome. Skip the XD and start right by getting a good .22 target pistol like a Browning Buckmark. Learn to shoot, practice, practice, practice... .22lr agout $6.50 per 100, .45 acp $40+ per 100. What you save in practice ammo you can spend on the .45 of your dreams down the road and shoot it well too.

I've shot an XD9 4" and XD45 5" and much prefer the .45

CHEVELLE I'm really considering your .45...

I own a XD45 full size 5", a XD45 compact 4", and a XD40sc and a XD9sc. I can conceal the XD45c just as well as the two sc's. But the sc's are lighter and easier on me at the end of the day.

There's nothing wrong with the XD9sc. I'd say go with that if it fits your hand. Be sure to add a Pearce grip extension.

If you want a 45 get the XD 45 compact.
The grip is big enough to fit my whole hand on, any more is unnecessary.
The overall size is comparable to a Glock 19/23 in overall height and length.
Here is a pic. with the XD45 compact beside a Glock 30.

Given your criteria (all around use including carry), I'd get the XD45 Compact 4". It's concealable and has the option of the smaller grip with the flush fit mags and the larger grip with the extended grip mags. 4" is plenty accurate and recoil is not bad at all

Barrel length is easier to hide than grip length for a lot of people.

.45acp isn't bad at all. If anything, the recoil from a .40s&w is worse.

Since you want to occasionally carry it concealed or while camping and traveling, I recommend a sub-compact XD.
But the problem is this: I don't think the sub-compact XD can be had in .45ACP.

I CCW a 5" XD45 Tactical. It can be done, and fairly easily, too, even in the hot summers we have here in the south. Just go out and buy a light weight sports coat in whatever color, and presto, concealed.

Yes, technically it is concealed...
But everyone will still know that you're carrying a handgun.

i say get the compact. if you are dead set that it has to be a .45acp. i persoanlly have been carrying an xd service model in .40 for 5 years, and it has been great. you eill be good to go with whatever you choose, but i would definetly suggest that you get something with a 4" barrel at least to meet all your needs. though a shorter barrel would meet some of them, and snce you are only gonna have one gun for a while, get what is gonna meet all your needs as best you can. get a good holster, and a good belt and you will be good to go.

You have to engage the grip safety to operate the slide on an XD, correct? How hard is that to accomplish one handed when injured?

If it were me I'd choose an S&W M&P45 over an Springfield XD.

But it's not me.

Good luck!
