STEVENS bolt action . Most places they can be had for under $3OO. Dicks and other big retailers sometimes have package deals even lower. The stocks are rather ugly but a couple cans of spray paint and you can have any camo pattern you want. They are one of the most accurate right out of the box rifles you can buy. With my handloads I shot an honest 1 inch group at 200yds.I had never done that with any other rifle I have ever owned.

Outdoor Sports in Jay Florida is selling Howa 1500 Ranchland compacts in .223 for 350 delivered to your ffl. Smokin deal.

Comes with a hogue over molded stock, aluminum pillars and your choice of black, tan or green. Three position safety.

I have yet to see a bad review of the Howas.

My daughter is getting a Savage axis (edge?) in that caliber. I have heard nothing but good about the accuracy of them. The only bad I have heard is that the stock is cheap, but go figure the rifle with scope is $320.

The rifle with the most kills for me is now in my best friend's safe. It's an NEF (H&R) Survivor in .223. Coyotes were its main target too. I think I paid <$250 for it and threw a $40 scope on it. Still wears the same glass.

A weatherby vanguard and a Howa 1500 are the same action. The houge stock on the 1500 is arguably a better stock.

In my mind, after handling both rifles, the Stevens 200 is a nicer rifle than the Axis that they make. In 223 & with a reasonable quality scope, coyote won't know that your rifle is bargain priced.

Or the Remington 700 sps
Or the tikka t3
Any of the savages?
Anything else good?
What is the best one?

Be careful buying a stevens before you realize the stock is made of melted down straws, other than that the action is that of a Savage 11 with no accutrigger.
Have fun, they are very accurate.

Straws or not they are VERY accurate rifles that shoot like a dream! The only thing I have against mine is the plastic trigger guard and the hard trigger. I added a trigger assist to make the pull a good bit lighter.

I don't want a Stevens, I have more money than that and could get something better; like a 700 sps, a tikka t3, or some other savage

I have the Savage 10FP in .308. Its very accuarate. A friend of mine had the same rifle in .223 and he absolutely loves it. The pricing should be right in line with what you are wanting to spend.

Hope this helps.

what would be your pick
MY pick WAS the Stevens. I have a Howa 1500 in 30.06. Great gun but the Stevens is more accurate. Remington and Tikka are both good choices but it will boil down to what you personally prefer.

Since you're set on 223, I'd get the Tikka T3 in 8 twist so you can shoot the 75gr bullets. They'll shoot a long ways in the wind & be easier on the fur.

Well I've read some finish issues with the rem., I think I'll go for a savage, Stevens, or tikka

Savage or Stevens would be first choice....I bought used a Contender Carbine in 223 a couple years ago for 450, included a 10" bull barrel 22 with match chamber, spare grip and forend for the shorty and a 3X9 scope...it shoots under an inch off the bags with Remington 45grain hp and has gotten me three yotes so far. Gotta keep your eyes open and ready to pounce.
Working on a Bushmaster right now. Have not settled on scope yet.

How do you characterize "better"? "Better" looking? "Better" name recognition? Cuz you won't get much better shooting from the box than the Stevens.

You could buy a cheap Stevens, and with the money you have left over relative to a "better" rifle buy a quality stock of your choice and an aftermarket trigger and put the rest of the cash you still have left over into a quality optic and base/rings.

Otherwise...my vote would be for a Savage 12FV; I have one in .204 that I love.

If money is not a big issue take a look at the CZ Carbine in .223

Sweet little rifle, very light and I have never known a CZ not be a shooter.

@boilerup
If I were to do that, I would end up with just a savage, am I right?
If not please clarify.
I have nit completely ruled it out, I just would like one that needs no upgrades and shoots great out if the box
