Fears expressed about potential dangers of an anti-gun newspaper publishing detailed maps revealing who owns guns have evidently materialized, New York State Senator Greg Ball stated today in a press release.

Ball “announced that a burglary has been reported on Davis Ave. in White Plains, New York that evidently ties into The Journal News gun maps,” the release revealed. “It is reported that the burglar used The Journal News’ interactive gun map to target a home included on the map. Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt.”

“The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” Ball accused. “If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens.”

Senator Ball will be unveiling legislation tomorrow, S2132, to protect citizens from having such information publicly disclosed. That such information exists to be abused in the first place is a source of contention among activist gun owners

In addition to Senator Ball’s legislation, the Vice President of the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County, Robert Buckley, said in a letter, publishing these maps online is jeopardizing the safety of residents and is irresponsible.

“The Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County Inc. is putting The Journal News on notice that we will hold [them] accountable for any incident where any of our over 25,000 members are involved with an incident where a criminal or ex-con presents themselves at the residence of one of our members as a result of their name being made public by [their] newspaper,” said Buckley.

There are two classes of "outted" permit holders who are really peeved:
o jail guards in the counties covered by Journal News are getting calls at home by inmates who now know where they live, and
o women under death threat who have moved and gotten pistol permits are afraid their stalkers are just a mouse click away.

The biggest problem with that article is that BGs can strategize ahead of time. Want unarmed resistance during a home invasion? Pick a house not listed. Want to steal a gun? Pick a house listed while the homeowners are out.

This was my beef all along: criminals actively targeting guns for theft while the owners are out.

Way to "get illegal guns off the street", journal news.
