CRKT m16 zytel questions

I am seriously looking at one of the these knives. I've got my eye on the m16-03z or the -13z. If anyone has strong feelings for or against those or others, let me know. Is there anything I should know before I buy?

Here's my main question. How does it ride in the pocket? It seems a little thick, and I generally carry in my right back pocket. I like my knives thin so I dont have to sit on a big thick bar.

Tell me about the carson flipper. Whats the deal? Is it a sort of wave knockoff? Can it be outfitted to be one?

I have been thinking of getting the M16-13Z myself.
The needle nose blade is fairly thin, so its not a tool to use for prying.

I already have the M16-14.
They are good knifes.
Quick to open and easy to close one handed.

They are not that thick that I'd have a problem with it.
The clip is strong and sturdy.

The Carson Flipper is a part of the blade.
When you hold the knife, place the tip of your finger on the flipper and pull on it while snapping your wrist quickly.
This will make the blade snap open, very quickly.
Now, the flipper works as a blade guard.
I also use the flipper when closing the blade one handed.

I just purchased the M16-12Z last week. Great knife! The Carson flipper opens the knife very quickly. I carry it in my right rear pocket and have no problem.

I've owned one for about a year now, it's regular gear, with that belt clip that works well any position.

and, I loosened it up for perfect combat status.

Bought the M16-14Z today at a gun show for $43. Seemed like a good price.

I carry the M16-02z in my right back pocket everyday all day. Great knife knife, and I really love the blade and the blade strength. Holds an edge well. That said there is one reason why I am replacing it.

Every damn time I reach for my wallet, I scrape the crap out of my knuckles on the knurled ring attached to the base of the blade that is used for flipping the blade out. It's the part that sticks out when the blade is closed.

It's been a great knife for the last 4 years but I think it's days are numbered.

If that isn't a problem than nothing will be. It rides great in the pocket and the action is smooth and quick. The handle is nice as well.

I always carry my M16-12Z, used to be just dropped in my left pocket, but the thumb studs stick out a good bit from the scales and are checkered quite aggresively, so I'd wear 1/4" diameter holes in my pocket rather quickly. Now I keep it clipped behind my back, IWB.

I rarely use the thumbstuds to open it, as the flipper is much easier to use.

If I bought another one, I'd get the -02Z, I dont like the serrations, as I prefer a clean cut to the jagged cuts the serrations produce. But other than that, I'm 100% satisfied with it. I bought mine from www.onestopknifeshop.com for like $40 after shipping two years ago.

I solved the problem of the thumbstud tearing up pockets and knuckles by filing down the serrations with a small metal file. The metal was fairly soft. So far the knife (an 03z)has been great and the Carson flipper makes it super quick to open.

I don't know anythign about metalurgy but would that weaken the metal at all?

How coarse of a file? Like a bastard mill?

I had the -13z for a little over a year. Loved it -- unfortunately I lost it while paintballing. It held an edge, opened quick, was thin enough, and light enough.

Noticed a number of people saying they didn't like having it in their back pocket -- I never thought of carrying it there honestly. I prefer to just clip it to my pants with the body of the knife IWB. It left about 1/4 to 3/8th's an inch poking out the top of my pants which is easily covered up even by a tucked in shirt (for the office environment).

Deploys quick too.

I carry a -03Z everyday, sometimes in the back pocket if my pistol is in my front pocket. Never had a problem with it. But I agree about all the pointy edges. Took a file to mine to smooth out the Carson Flipper and the thumbstuds. Opens super fast, more than once I've been accussed of carrying an auto. The flipper is nice, but I think those teflon bearings might have abit to do with it as well.

Thanks for the tip about filing down the checkered areas. I just did it to my knife and it definitely made a difference.

I went at the serations tonight with a fe files then finished they way I finish my chisels; 180 grit then 220,380,600,1500 and then some compound on a strop.

The polish looks pretty good and I can still get a good "flick" on it.
