In the next week or so I should be getting a check for approx. $700.

I have been wanting to purchase a handgun for sometime now and I have narrowed it down to two options.

Smith and Wesson M&P .40

FN-FNP40

I really like both, and both have their ups and downs which I've researched extensively.

Which would you take?

I like the M&P more...but don't own one and haven't shot one. So my vote is pretty much worthless. But If I were going to purchase a new polymer pistola it would be between the XDM and the M&P.

I have shot both in 9mm. I chose the M&P because it felt better, more natural to shoot, for me.

Both fine guns.

I bought an FN, but it's a .45 with a safety - the USG model.

Six of one, half dozen etc., etc. The FN fit me a little better.

I recently noticed that S&W sells aftermarket barrels www.smith-wessonmp.com/category/977-Smith_Wesson_MP_Barrels.aspx

"Aftermarket barrels offer increased accuracy over the factory barrel found in your Smith and Wesson M&P."

The stock FNP hammer forged barrels seem to have an excellent reputation for accuracy. Jeff Quinn's review at www.gunblast.com/fnp45.htm included this...

"This gun thinks it is a target pistol. Most all loads grouped under two inches at twenty-five yards, and my .45 ACP target handload would put them all in the same hole if I could hold the gun still!"

Not that I'm normally that good, ha, but it is certainly encouraging.

I own an M&P 40 and like it, especially the interchangable backstrap. Does it really offer anything over the FN? I don't think so. It really is just a matter of personal preference. That said, I have never fired the FN.

Go with the M&P. If you need more assurance, you may want to take a look at what a bunch of LEO's think about the M&P40 over at PoliceLink.com.

I love my M&P 40!

If you like SIGs then get the FN.

M&Ps are unique : either you love or hate them.

I do like SIGs, especially the decocker and easy take down. That's the one thing that is pulling me away from the S&W.

Both are fine guns, and neither is "better" than the other in my opinion.

I would decide whether you prefer a DA/SA trigger (FN) or a consistent trigger pull (M&P) and decide from there.

I like my FNP .45 ACP a lot. It HAS a replacable backstrap for adjusting the grip. I have short fingers so I run the thinner backstrap on mine. In the lockable case that the pistol comes in is a thicker backstrap for folks with longer fingers. It is a matter of about 60 seconds to change them out. Just stick a paper clip in the little hole on the strap and it trips a latch that secures the backstrap to the pistol. Slide one off and slide the other on until it clicks. It locks in solid with no problems. The FNP.45 also comes with THREE magazines. I have the GOV model that has one 15 rd. mag and two 14 rd. mags. I swapped some 20 yr. old sks ammo at a gun show for two more new 15 rd. factory mags. The case also comes with a lock ,owners manual and shell case when it was tested. I also have two shooters paks. A few models come with them. A shooters pak has a BLADE TECH holster, mag holder for two mags, and a yellow training barrel for acadamy classes or classroom carry of the pistol. I have one pak set up pancake style and the other set up with belt loops. The FNP .45 ACP is the best handgun I have ever owned. My friend and I both have hand held NV scopes and practice night fire on his 56 acre farm. It is a situation where we set up targets at night, hold the scope in one hand and fire the FNP with our right hand. We both have lasers on our pistols and it is easy to find the sillouet target with the NV scope, place the laser dot on the target and try to put 15 rds. in the ten ring. The FNP.45 has a rail on the dust cover under the barrel for mounting lasers or lights. A decent NV scope can be found at the Harbor Freight stores on sale for about $50. A decent laser can be had nowadays for less than $100. BTW I am from the old school. I would not give you two cents for a handgun without a hammer. I despise Glocks. I think people are crazy for buying a DA handgun without a hammer and a twelve pound trigger pull instead of a DA/SA handgun. I just don't get the Glockcrap. People act like they have been bitten by Zombies when it come to some of these handguns with the gimmicks. They fail to see that their life is on the line when it comes to using one of these pistols in a back alley or dark parking lot.

if i couldn't own an xd for some reason, i would have the m&p. they point great, they are reliable, accurate, and they have ran well in training courses. the fn might be a fine gun however i have little experience with them overall.

Love my FNP-9M, go FNP. I would take any FNP over any M&P on any day of the week.

I have no first hand experience with either of these but I have handled the S&W and it does fit my hand well and point nicely. Probably a toss up but I have heard some negative things about S&W customer service but you might never need it.
