Customizing Mosin Nagant Help

Mosins are a dime-a-dozen at gun shows, and you can handle/inspect them there for bore, action, etc. My advice would be to make sure the bore is clean and rifling intact, and to look for junk in the chamber (makes the bolt stick after it warms up). The latter is cleanable, but a hassle to deal with.

So I now realize that the mosin would be a money pit, though unique in the end. I still want to do a similar project, what is a good platform to start with? Mauser? Other? Thanks for all the info.

Start with a standard Mauser 98 action in the white and build up from there, you'll find it a lot easier to find parts. CZ 550 actions are excellent, as are Argie '09 actions.

I don't think the Mosin would be more difficult to build into a custom rifle than a Mauser. As I said before all custom rifles are a money pit.
