CZ-75B 9mm Range Report
Date: September 1, 2003
Location: Gravel pit in Western Washington State
Rounds Fired: 150
Manufacturer: Winchester (various loadings), mostly Wally World Winchester White Box (WWWB)
Malfunctions: Zero
Ergonomics: Wow, what a comfortable pistol to shoot. The backstrap swell and beavertail are extremely will-fitted to my hand (either left or right) and the natural point of aim is perfect for me. Controls are extremely easy to access and use (I would call them reflexively easy to use since I didn’t have to think or fumble for the slide release, magazine release, or the manual safety). The natural position on draw was always centered in the web of my thumb and forefinger. Trigger reach was perfect for my normal center of the pad on the forefinger trigger position.
Recoil: Very controllable, allowing fast sight picture acquisition even during rapid fire, double-taps, and triple-taps. It seems to me that the low bore axis was instrumental in recoil control especially since I always use a high grip. I compared the recoil (with the same ammunition) to my Ruger P95 and as much as I enjoy and trust my P95 the CZ was more controllable.
Trigger: Took a little getting used to at first, long and heavy DA, relatively crisp SA (a little “gritty†right before the hammer drops – but this smoothed out a bit even during only firing 150 rounds; I am assuming that this will continue to smooth out as I fire the pistol more). Definitely not as nice as my SA MilSpec 1911A1 but still a pretty darn nice trigger for an out-of-the-box pistol.
General: First 50 rounds were fired to familiarize myself with the pistol – slow fire at 25, 15, and 7 yards (HydraShoks really mess up a beer can!). The remaining rounds were fired from the draw into a Weaver stance for ten-round strings. I did not bench test for accuracy as I did not have a bench and was firing from the tailgate of my pickup. I was very pleased with the accuracy of this pistol and let it suffice to say that it is far more accurate than I am capable of shooting. Ejection of the spent casings was always at 4 o’clock and made neat little piles of casings (very helpful in policing up my mess).
Overall: I don’t have chronograph stats (don’t even own and wouldn’t know how to use a chronograph), and I didn’t measure the pistol dimensions or the weight of the trigger break but I do know that I am extremely happy with this pistol. If I can get a few hundred more rounds through it without malfunctions caused by the pistol then this will definitely become one of my constant companions. The one quote from the end of the day that I will share is, “I sure am glad I didn’t buy the Beretta 92.†Nothing against Berettas, I have owned several and think they’re incredible, but this CZ has been amazing so far (and MUCH less expensive).
By the way, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department was very pleasant to deal with when they responded to complaints of gunfire . . . checked our CCW licenses (ran us for wants and warrants, I’m sure), checked our backstop, chatted a bit about what we were shooting, made sure we had permission to be on private property, and told us to be safe and have fun.
Have included one picture of a 7-yard, 10-round string. Target is a 25-yard slow fire target.
