So I know only the basics about 1911's. Meaning I know how to shoot them and how they operate. I want a very nice looking 1911 that I can wear for open carry. Maybe one that is black and gold or an all shiny surface. I want a full size barrel as well not one of the 3 or 4 in barrels. I have been looking at kimber what do you think?

Colt makes some purdy guns in the $700-$1200 range. Personally I want a blued Les Baer monolith commander lenght, they only run $2000-$2700. But they sure look good and rumor is they shoot pretty well.

I'm not a big fan of Kimber's myself. No I'm not a basher, it just seems to me that kimber designs guns for the flavor of the month and I personally like a more classic look.

A Colt would be nice add a set of custom grips and that would be class. Now if you want a Pimp looking 1911 then Taurus can fill that for you.

Need, eh? :)

If you can accept a "1911 style" pistol rather than the "real" thing, take a look at the Para Ordance P14 (if you have big hands). NOTHING beats 15 rounds of .45 in one's hand.

Mimbers...I mean Kimbers, are not what they used to be.

I disagree, I have a Mimber with 2500+ rounds through it. No issues. Mine is a Pro CDP II. My buddy has a plain old Kimber Custom II with similar round count. His factory mags even work well (although mine didn't?). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, MIM parts and all.

That being said, it would help if they OP gave us a price range. Sounds like he wants a good ol' Texas BBQ gun. One of those "nickle plated sissy pistols" as Tommy Lee Jones so eloquently put it. I've wanted to build a custom colt commander for just such purposes myself. None of my 1911's are meant to be lookers. :( The Pro CDP II gets a few compliments at the range, though.

I popped into this post with the hopes that my 7 year old was soliciting money for a new boomstick for his pops...dang.

I've been nosing around for a nice 1911 as well. No rush, the cheapie I've got is serving me well as a learning platform on how to tune them and I'm enjoying that aspect. But I'd like to get a really nice looking 1911 single stack at some point in the next year. Something blued and so nicely done that it looks ocean deep and optically flat. Something with nicely done engraving in a proud but not overbearing manner. With the slide, barrel and action tuned to match specs.

In looking up all this and from reading reports I keep coming back to Springfield. And in looking at their website once again thanks to this thread I see that they have a full on custom option. You may want to look into that a little more.

It also sounds like you want to have some engraving or other decorating done. Making a BBQ gun up by any chance? If so you'll likely end up sending it out to an engraver before blueing. I wonder if Springfield can arrange that for you at the appropriate time during their own processes? Or it may be possible to request the gun in the white so you can just ship it onwards for any engraving and final blueing?

And don't forget that you're going to want to get a holster that is up to the standards of your new pistol!

And finally you'd better post lots of pictures of whatever you get. It sounds like you're in the process of fullfilling a bit of a dream. And we want to share in it.... :D

Dan Wesson in stainless steel. The PM-7 comes to mind.

Shiny without going overboard to tacky. Slap some "USMC" grips on it and you are good to go.

Springfield Custom Ship

Check out the Springfield Custom Shops work.
You can mix and match and get a nice pistol built to your pocket book and taste.

I currently own 4 1911s

Two Taurus Duo-tones, a Kimper Tactical pro II and, a Springfield SS mil-spec that has been upgraded close to a TRP. I can highly recomend the Taurus duo-tone both for looks as well as performance. My kimber is not one of their prettiest but they do make some awesome looking guns. Reliability from the factory seems to be hit or miss, though they can be made to run right fairly easily. The Sprinfield TRP is pretty nice to look at. I think that the Dan wesson has some of the cleanest lines and is very sleek looking. However, looks are secondary to me and I would worry more about reliability than how your gun looks on your hip. My next 1911 is going to be a Rock Island Tactical or Compact Tactical, a real "working gun". If you want a "barbeque gun" get some real nice leather and a nice pair of grips thats all you will see anyway.

I do want a nice BBQ gun. Functionally It has to be nice as well though or whats the point. I carry a Glock 19 right now in a Serpa and lots of people think I'm a detective. The 1911 will fill both purposes for me I think. Thanks for the input guys.

Im in the market for a 1911 aswell, from everything Ive seen and read the taurus is a good buy, swap out the important parts for high quality ones and your golden. For what you get taurus makes a nice gun for a decent price.

Get a Taurus, swap out the barrel and trigger for ones made by Wilson Combat, and enjoy.
A new barrel in a 1911 should not be a "drop 'n' swap" thing. It really ought to be fitted if you want the best accuracy and function out of it.

Maybe one that is black and gold or an all shiny surface.
Gold = gaudy IMHO, but royal blue is flash with class. ;)
