A friend of mine opened a chapter of the Pink Pistols here in Dallas - I'll be volunteering my time in teaching:

The Pink Pistols is an organization that encourages and teaches sexual minorities to safely and legally carry firearms for use in self-defense. (Armed gays don't get bashed...) It isn't just for gays, of course - the sexual minority community includes homosexuals, bisexuals, transgendered or transexual folk, polyamorous persons, BDSM practioners - and friends and family of sexual minorities who want to support every individual's right to self defense.

Good for them, and all of us. Proficiency in self defense I'm sure will decrease victimization.

I'll help out if needed, when I can. Might even get my wife to as well.

Mentioned this at THR/DFW yet?
Thanks very much - what's THR/DFW?

First, Pink Pistols accepts anyone - it's not only for sexual minorities. As an example, I'm straight - but I back anyone who wants to learn how to protect themselves and I'm happy to pass along what I've learned over the years. I don't see any discrimination there.

Second, is there anything wrong with people having groups of like-minded people? Freedom of association and all that - and I know of people who were assaulted solely because of their choice of partner, nothing else. From the Pink Pistols FAQ:

What are the "Pink Pistols"?
We are a shooting group that honors diversity and is open to all shooters. We help bring new shooters into the sport and provide a fun social environment for all our members. We work to build bridges between the shooting community and other communities, such as those based on alternative sexualities.

Do I need to be gay to join?
You don't have to be gay to join us, any more than you have to be Black to support civil rights, or be Jewish to support the JPFO (Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership). We include members from the GLBT, Polyamarous, and BDSM communities, but you don't need to be gay or have an alternative sexuality to join and shoot with us.

I found this quote, which seems to be appropriate:

"You probably have some habit or practice that I would find disgusting. If your actions do not affect me, I will leave you in peace, especially when I know as little about the subject as you obviously do about firearms. I ask of you the same courtesy. I have owned firearms my entire life. I neither owe nor offer you an apology."

I'm not angry in the slightest - I thought your post was amusing :D

My first post was - and subsequent responses were - meant to highlight that Pink Pistols is not only for gays.

"Lack of information" - ok, please allow me to highlight the sections that you apparently skipped over:

And please stop with the ad hominem attacks as to my emotional state; I'm not going to bother suggesting what that says about you.

Andy, THR/DFW is the Yahoo Dallas THR local collective. I think you're a member.

Oh, and by the way, I simply like helping folks with their right of self reliance and self determination. And I'm about as far to 'straight' as it gets. I support Pink Pistols. GLBT? Feh. We're all human. That's enough of a classification as far as I'm concerned.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I'm supportive of everyone's right to shoot. By catering to a certain group, you will likely gain a more loyal base within that group, but alienate other. Every group has its place, but shouldn't be surprised if people outside that group are indifferent.

Feel free to speak up on our local Yahoo group, the one Richard mentioned. There's a link in my signiture. We haven't been very active as far as getting together as a large group lately, but there's a fairly tight knit core group that manages to get out and shoot some now and then.

I suppose it goes without saying that anyone is welcome.

The "gun rights" core in this country has been conservative, native English-speaking white guys (go to an NRA meeting in you local town and look and listen). Unless you are deaf and blind, you have to be aware this is a shrinking demographic relative to the entire population--and this AIN'T changing, people. So, if gun rights are going to be preserved, we are going to need new allies, so I say bring on Pink Pistols, Brown Pistols, Black Pistols and a whole rainbow coalition of pistols (sorry, Rev. Jesse).

It is easy to say "well, why does this minority need their own group?", but if you listen to some of things conservative, native English-speaking white guys tend to routinely say about gays, for example, it is little wonder that they might be more comfortable in their own group. Also, purely from a political perspective, I think it is cool that there is a "gay" gun rights group--I think it increases the opportunities for inroads into that community, and shows that gun rights are not a monolithic issue.

Bottom line: this is a good thing for all concerned.

Personally, I support any pro-IIA group out there. Also, the previous NRA president was Sandy Froman, a Jewish, Harvard-educated attorney from San Francisco, which I thought was a fantastic move on the part of the NRA to diversify its membership base and appeal to other groups.

I think that any efforts to diversify and expand the pro-IIA crowd are outstanding. I'm tired of firearm owners being stereotyped, and diversifying our support base is the quickest way to dispel these stereotypes.

Most people, when they think of pro-IIA individuals, picture the "evil" NRA led by Charleton Heston and a bunch of "evil" old white men from the boonies (not that being an old white man from a rural area is a bad thing, and no, I don't support affirmative action). I'd like to show the world that we are diverse, from all ages, all races, all education levels, and that we are in essence a civil rights group fighting for the protection of our Constitutional rights.

In other words, I'd like for the right to keep and bear arms to cross all boundaries (as it should) in the eyes of the average American. If we can alter the negative stereotype of firearm owners and members of pro-gun organizations like the NRA, then that will be a huge step in the right direction. Image is unfortunately important in today's society, and our image is not portrayed well by the extremely biased and anti-gun media. Groups like the pink pistols might help change that for the better.

Political activism.

From what I have read the Pink Pistols intent is to be politically active to support and enhance gun rights for all people. You gotta love that. Most folks sit on their rears and let other folks carry the load. TSRA, for instance, is notoriously deficient in Texas hunters. TSRA ran a one-page ad in the Texas State Hunting regulations book for a couple of years and got ZERO response.

This is a group to be welcomed and celebrated in the shooting community. They say they will put their money and energy on the line for the values I believe in.

Hope we get some of them in the TSRA. Alice Tripp, the lobbiest will be glad to hear from any of them.

Everyone has the right to protect themselves. We need new shooters from all walks of life, and all are welcome IMO. Hats off to you sir for actually doing something for our cause where others frequently just talk about it.

Best of luck.

I, like others on this board, support every human beings right to self defense. Like Oleg says, "Self defense, it's a basic human right".
