Even though this is 'small potatoes' compared to my Enfields and Mauser, it was inherited from a grandfather in the late 70's.
I use it every week or two, as often as the larger caliber rifles, and has held up pretty well.

The bolt handle has either an 'S' or faded '5', and near the rear sight is an '18' inside a circle. My Dad's impression is that this rifle is from the 40's.
Is there a way to be more specific?

If you can confirm the type of magazine and any distinctive features, or especially if you can provide pictures, we'll sure try to help. Does it have a serial #? Length of barrel? Buttplate markings? Anything on barrel?

Moo!

I dated an old savage too -- wow. I figured it was over when I was just sitting on the sofa watching TV with her and felt compelled to blurt out "Scottish Cow"! "What"!? she said with the look of murder in her Caledonian eyes. "I was just thinkin' of those farms up North" I said. "Highland Cattle" she somewhat skeptically but more calmly corrected me -- or so she thought. You might note the resemblance below yourself. ;)
