I picked the Rock because that's what I have. but if I got free rein to choose it would be a CZ75B in .40 S&W.

Good choice, I have a CZ75B in .40 S&W and picked the RI for the sake of the poll/thread, you can’t beat a 1911.

I do agree with the shotgun recommendation though...just use buckshot."
what r u smokin no crook is going to go "ohhh is only birdshot" use some common sense

Maybe you need the dose of common sense. There are three possible outcomes with bird shot:
1) You scare the guy away
2) You get lucky and incapacitate him
3) You piss him off and he goes ballistic on you

I'm not willing to risk the third outcome -- so I'm going to use something that has proven stopping capability. We all know that there are no guarantees based on caliber, but you run a significant risk of a bad outcome using an insufficient load. And you seem to ignore the fact that the guy in your house may be some guy hopped up on drugs who won't notice anything less than a severing of his central nervous system.

Of the choices you offered in your poll, I selected the P95. The one I had, years ago, always went bang with everything I stuffed into it.

That being said, my personal choice would be the XD45 5" Tactical. Big bullet in a platform that holds 13+1 rounds. It also chews the head out of an IDPA (P) target at 25 yards.

I would pick the Ruger P-95. Mostly because I already have a P-944 therefore I'm already familiar with the way the controls are sat up on a P-series probably wouldn't be too much of an adjustment. Also the Ruger I have now is reliable-I trust it to go bang when I want it to.

Shotgun with your choice of buckshot. Slugs too. And there's plenty of waterfowl loads out there that I would feel extremely comfortable using.

Choosing off your list only, I would choose the Ruger.

Just thinking about the "Family's safety!" I was not questioning you ability to aim a firearm. I have several handguns at my ready if an intruder should dare enter my home! I also have 2 shotguns, load with heavy shot and YES they will take a person down, it won't kill the person, but it will stop/slow them down. That buckshot that was mention will cut up sheet rock just as bad if not worse than .45 cal or 9mm. So, I was just thinking about the safety of the family. Rock salt is very effective. Try getting shot with some some time and you will understand what I'm talking about.

But anyway, it seems that I'm the bad guy here. So shoot and aim. I wish you the best in your endeavor. God bless.

In that case, just get a blank firing shotgun. That should "scare" the bejabbers out of him.

A weapon should be able to incapacitate an attacker...not just make him hurt or scared. You never know what type of crazy you will encounter....especially someone crazy enough to challenge you in a gunfight when you have a shotgun. That type of BG needs to be stopped NOW.

the problem with blanks:

1. you go BANG!
2. BG goes 'oh ****' and pulls his own gun
3. BG goes BANG! and a projectile comes your way.

if your'e gonna talk the talk (bang!) you better be able to walk the walk (projectile)

By the way, I voted for the Ruger P95...as a backup to a shotgun. Based on the choices you picked, cost seems to be an issue. Can't think of a better value than the P95. Someone said CDNN Sports was selling them for $250, if I recall.

Rappy,
I'm curious what are your criterea?

What led you to "narrow down " your choices to a rather diversified list?

Will the weapon be strictly for home defense?

Are you open to suggestions that aren't on the list?

Do you own a firearm now?

It may not be a Colt, but in your poll the 1911 / 45 ACP wins my vote.

45 ACP wins as a SD

And it is easier to have a handgun in one hand and the phone / 911 in the other.

But I really do like a shotgun for HD. Just not sure it is the right weapon for everyone.

I am .45 guy......so with most other options being equal....I'll go with the .45.

From the list given I'd take the Ruger P95. Inexpensive but effective ammo and while the Ruger's are ugly and blocky they shoot well, are boringly reliable and are built like tanks.

Berreta 92FS or EAA 10mm. Shooting blanks or birdshot is a stupd idea. At minimum shoot bean bag shells then when you knock the perp down beat him with an ASP till he submits.

You really need a shotgun for home defense and it will work if you need it to harvest some meat to eat. A shotgun should be a persons first firearm. Then a rifle or a pistol. But if you are intent on a pistol. Then the Ruger is a good one to learn on.
