Deputy Reassigned After Gun Left In Parking Lot
Gun, Holster Found After Deputy Leaves School

CAMPOBELLO, S.C. -- A Spartanburg County school resource officer has been reassigned.

Deputies said he left his gun in a school parking lot at Campobello-Gramling School.

Deputies say the deputy accidentally left his holster -- with his gun in it -- on top of his police cruiser, then drove off.

The holster and gun fell off the car and landed in the parking lot.

Within an hour, someone found them and called authorities.

The deputy is still with the sheriff's office, but no longer working at a school.

Oh you just hate it when that happens. Was with a prtner one night, had been booking a suspect in the justice center, got a hot call, we both went tearing out to answer, then realized we had not retrived our sidearms, fortunately I had my back up, but my partner didn't have nuthin'. So very embarrising to go back into the center get our weapons.

Cops, up here, are forever losing their firearms. They don't look after their privately owned pistols either. Rolled into the range one night to find a Glock(when they were new to the world) with mags and ammo sitting on the bench of one position. Called the local constabulary to come get it. Somehow we found out it belonged to some copper who had been shooting earlier that day. We never did find out how much excrement he got into.
At the gun shop I worked in long ago, cops would come in to change grips. They weren't allowed to do anything else. One guy's service piece was rusted shut. Another had put on the holster, but hadn't put his revolver(long ago) into it. His partner went ballistic.

Well, if the kids do what they are supposed to do, and aren't in the parking lot, then a responsible adult will come and pick up the weapon and it will be returned.

And since we know kids follow the rules, we shouldn't have a problem here. That's why their there, because that magically stops anyone from breaking them. So, this officer should not be in any trouble the way I see it.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but it shows the whole anti-gunners way of thinking with the "Put rules on guns, then gun crimes won't happen" situation.

Yes, it's incredibly careless and indicative of a lack of attention to detail and alertness we don't want in law enforcement personnel ... However, for those who carry a gun seven days a week, and for those to whom it's just another tool or uncomfortable accoutrement ... this stuff is gonna happen. It's rather like a normal person who -- maybe only once in his life -- leaves his wallet (or her purse), his keys, briefcase, eyeglasses or coffee mug on top of his car and drives off ... Is a gun any different than these items? Oh yes, and misplacing a gun is bad juju and simply shouldn't happen. But it will.
yep just goes to show that cops are the only ones responsible enough to keep guns.
Sarcasm like this may bring a smile to some, but really only demonstrates a lack of experience ...

I don't think that this was intended to ridicule LEOs. It ridicules antis and blissninnies who spout such nonsense.

I do understand what you mean, but I think that sarcasm like this stems from the perception that if a non-officer did something like this, the penalties might not be as light as a reassignment.

.

Was his name Barney and did this happen in Mayberry LOL !!!

It was sarcasm directed at antis and to bring it into perspective.

As tor said for a regular person there would likly be a lot more of a penalty then the cop had.

And it demonstrates how stupid the notion some have that all cops are wonderful outstanding individuals and none of us mere mortals can be trusted with a gun. Many cops are heros, most cops are fine fellows, some cops are irresponible, super weeinie powertrippers, or just plain aholes. When I make a sarcastic or bad comments about police it is the latter group that it stems from not police in general.

It was sarcastic and a comment made in reference to the dumb notion that just cause someone is a cop he is just so responisible or at least has a brain.

+1 Old Dog

You are an island of common sense in a sea of emotional diatribe.

Guys, I understand all this ... But on this board, we're just preaching to the choir. Also, I don't think some may understand the career repercussions firearm incidents lead to for some law enforcement personnel (now, I know there are some agencies out there that might overlook stuff). I know one long-time reserve officer who not only lost his position for "misplacing" his firearm, he will never get another reserve job with any agency ... I know a sworn officer who, after a negative incident while off-duty involving his duty pistol, got an unpaid suspension, lost a lot of money, won't get promoted anytime soon and probably lost his future in law enforcement as a career. While an average citizen who "misplaces" a gun, and assuming the firearm is quickly found and either turned into the police or returned to the owner, may suffer zero consequences except for a little public humiliation. Of course, all bets are off if the wrong person finds the gun and either accidently shoots someone (i.e., an incident involving children) or commits a crime with it ...

I submit there may be stiffer consequences for a police officer than for average Joe Blow ...

Hey, it could be a lot worse.

lighten up just having some fun. I am not the first to poke fun at someone elses mistake it happens everyday and I read alot of them right here.
I support the police 100% Hey guy made a mistake , hes not the first and will not be the last. I wish him the best
Two years ago out hunting a guy left his tailgate down and went driving off and rifle and case came shootin right out the back. He would have never known until he got home, we chased him down and let him know what happened

Must be lucky

Officer at a community policing station (read one of the apartments in the block) did the same with his full auto MP5.

RUSHED BACK when he realized it to find the case, weapon still in it, leaning up against the "station" door.

I consider myself a law abiding citizen, but finding THAT would tempt fate, what?

a local city councilman left a pistol in his car while letting it idle to warm up. Of course the car and weapon were stolen, and the councilman was unfortunately not reassigned
