Did anybody else get a book from the NRA?

Before I crack it open, can anybody tell me what it is? I prefer a nice clean package when I do a "return to sender".

It may be a great book, but I really hate it when they just up and send it to me.

I got a tape,,, American Rifleman's "Guns of Valor". The bill with it is for nine dollars, and it says to send nine dollars and keep the tape, or to return the tape, or to keep the tapse with their compliments.

Legally, it is unsolicited merchandise, and you are not required to either send money or return it. They are counting on your conscience to send them money.
I kept mine. I am pleased with it. It has some interesting trivia of past heros, Alvin York, etc. ,, some info on gun inventions, and footage of some battle reenactments.

I have to admit I wasn't pleased with this type of fund raising. Maybe just me but it reminded me of the tactics of the record and music tape clubs of a few decades ago and just sort of turned me off having to deal with merchandise return on something I did not order.

The box says "Bound printed matter" and it's heavier than a tape. So I still think it's a book. Keeping it does play on my conscience, but it's also annoying. I'm so CONFLICTED!

I sent it back.

Didn't watch it because it wasn't a DVD

Hmmm. I got tapes a few years ago. Same deal: Surprise! Here's a Tape. That'll be $21.99.

I went ahead and sliced open the envelope, it's a pair of books by Thomas Pain from the Classic Books Collection or something like that. $9.

No book received here. But like Zundfolge asls, why not DVDs instead? Tapes are so 1980s and take up so much more space than a DVD.

BTW, don't want a book unless it's something I don't already have. Anybody got Roger Lamb's account of the American Revolution? I read it once through the inter-library loan.

I got a tape from them a couple of years ago and, not having a VCR, pretty much ignored it. They started sending dunning letters. They acted like I was a deadbeat and a crook for not falling in line.

I do resent it when any concern I deal with starts to believe that they own me. I've had Monkey Wards bill me for product insurance that I didn't order and America On Line steal $100 from my credit card for a bogus auto club scam.

In the case of Monkey Ward, they lost a lot of customers and went broke. I filed credit card theft complaints on AOL and got my money back. I will continue to belong to the NRA but the several hundred dollars per year over and above membership that I used to send them now goes elsewhere.

The book is...

Tom Paine's "Common Sense" (IIRC). I got it a few eeeks ago. Or is that "weeks".....

Anyways, I opened it, found it was made in the "classic" tradition, a red simulated leather cover, again IIRC. Type face is meant to simulate the old classic style which to me is a bit difficult to read, not very clear to these old eyes.

I sent them the $12 they asked for and included a note to NOT send me any more, thank you.

I just received a book from the NRA. I am a Life Time Member of the NRA. I am proud of that, but I find them mildly annoying with all the junk mail I get.
However, the book is about the historical and political roots of the Second Amendment. It is a fascinating and well written discussion about the right to keep and bear arms, the necessity of a militia and the roots of the standing army. I never would have bought it at a book store and I am happy to have paid for it.
That said, I do hate junk mail. But this is not a complicated conspiracy. The NRA is good at raising money. They also are doing a good job (with some minor exceptions in Pennsylvania...) representing us in Washington DC. Buy it, return it, what ever...but don't worry about it!

I haven't gotten a book yet. They're probably still p.o.'d at me for not paying for the video I didn't ask for (someday I'll send it back to them, but not until I've stubbornly outlasted their "Pay Us, You Life-Member Scum" letters).

The conflict is between being annoyed enough to want to keep the book and not pay for it and feeling that I should take the time to return it or keep it and pay for it.

I suspect they are po'ed about the video they sent me too. They haven't solicited me since. I did not feel obligated to send back the video because it was unsolicited, to do so would have cost me time and money and the due process was missing from the slavery or involuntary servitude equation.

No book for me. But I did recently get a large packet of coupons. Some were quite good, up to $100 dollars off on gun purchases from various manufacture.

I got a phone solicitation today to buy two copies of Wayne's new book.

One for myself, and one for a local library. I've never been deeply moved by anything Mr. LaPierre has said, and apparently there's not enough interest in the marketplace to drive distribution at bookstores.

The caller had the paranoia gig going (those libs that control the media also control the bookstores) about how Wayne's message wasn't gonna get out. Seems to me that calling on NRA memebers to buy the book is preaching to the choir. And an ineffective means of selling books.

If Barnes & Noble and other big bookstores are blackballing the book, the NRA would be much better served by starting letter/email writing campaign, media blitz, and boycott. Those actions can change corporate behavior. A bunch of gun nuts buying Wayne's books from the NRA will not change their behavior.

I don't think I called but I did email them and was taken off the junk mail list. Save a tree, call or email them.

Besides, that tree saved means more target paper or gun books.

I too, got fed up with there junk. The last straw was when they sent the vidio and said pay $$$ or return the tape or keep the tape and pass it on to a friend and send no money. I threw it in a drawer and forgot about it. After I received the third request for the money, I mailed them a letter saying I didn't order the tape and wasn't paying or sending it back. Tactics like that is why I am cancelling my NRA membership. A few months later at a gun show I told an NRA recruiter about my experience and he assured me I could ask to be taken off the junk mail list and it would not happen again. I renewed my membership and haven't had any more problems.

I called a couple of years ago about something and wound up telling the guy how all the solicitations and junk mail really bothered me. I guess it worked because I'm not getting any of the stuff you guys are. I still get the old money-raising stuff, but not nearly as often as I used to. It doesn't bother me to just throw stuff away without reading it, or keep an unsolicited tape/book. I wouldn't pay to send it back.

Thanks for renewing your membership ! As I said in my previous post I was not pleased with recieving that tape, I however am not so displeased as to allow it to effect my support for the NRA.
I appreciate the NRA and all the good they have done over the years. They will continue to get my 100% support, but that doesn't always mean I can afford to give money.
The NRA plays a very important roll in our right to keep and bear arms. I don't always agree with how they do things, but I have always realized that without them gun owners would be worse off.
