It says that the old man was "known to carry a gun in his truck", NEVER that he was armed. It is a pretty safe assumption that he did not actually HAVE a gun on his person, because the article doesn't say that he did, and it's a fact that would have had huge bearing on the case if it were true. If I'm wrong, there is nothing to indicate this.
