I like to keep some fairly accessible should a need arise. A burglar isn't exactly going to give me a 20 second timeout or anything. Then again, I don't have any small children around that might try to ingest it either.
I do not lock mine up currently, but will when I finish building my new house with a foundation bolted down safe. I guess one good thing is if the house catches fire, there will not be rounds going off toward the fire department.
From my understanding it is not a good idea to lock up your ammo with your guns. I guess because the ammo could go up real easy and take your guns as well. Of course I have the same problem as most...not enough room in the gun safe for ammo.
I don't have a large safe yet, so instead of locking up my guns, I lock up my ammo. I have a small pistol safe that my CCW goes in each night. I'm moving soon and plan on getting a large safe/RSC and then the guns will go in. I think I'll continue to lock up the ammo too.
Ehh I keep my self defense jacketed hollow points locked up with my CX4 but my .22 ammo is in the range bag for everyone to see. I will likely be purchasing 1,200 rounds soon and have absolutely no plans for locking it up. Without the gun the ammo is no more lethal than throwing a little rock. Also gun powder is not an explosive its a rapid incinerate. It propels the bullet because the powder ignites instantly.
Common misconception that ammo explodes. You would have to get it into red hot heat and even then the bullet wont go more than 3 inchs without a barrel to channel the force.
Nomad, I beg to differ. Have you not ever seen someone toss a box of .22 shells in a camp fire? Some moron did this at a campsite once. It took a while, but they did explode. Several of them made a wizzz sound, so I know they went more than a 3" distance.
