Does Anyone Else Like Three-Inch Revolvers?

I had two-inchers and four-inchers for ages, then a few sixes. I'd read that people really like their three-inchers, and after I got one, I understood why. The're so nice and light and easy to point. I seem to shoot them about as well as a 4". After I got my first three-inch 38 special a couple of years ago, I somehow ended up with two "matched sets"...

The two on the left are both Taurus Model 82's. The top one is an ex police revolver from 2000: It has a full lug, solid upper barrel piece, hammer spur, and surprisingly large grips (the trigger is excellent). The bottom one is from 1992 (I'm assuming it's a commercial model): it has no lug, the flat piece on top of the barrel has a trough that lightens it, I've removed the hammer spur, and it has small boot grips. They're both very good shooters. It's fun to have two versions of the exact same revolver that feel so different. The boot grip one feels waaaay smaller, even though the frames are exactly the same.

The two on the right are both "j-frames". The one on top is a Taurus Model 85. It 's stainless with a full lug. The one on bottom is a S&W Model 36 from 1965 that I've been fixing up - it has a "pencil barrel" with no lug. I put nearly identical larger grips on them. They both fit my hands decently that way - I can get most of my pinky on the grip.

I took the police turn-in and old Model 36 to the range with me yesterday and enjoyed shooting them both. I can shoot a nice 3" K-frame about as well as a 4", and had fun doing that. The old Smith was fun, too. This was its second range trip since the 1970's or so, and it's starting to feel smoother. Other than a few fliers, I was hitting a 4" x 4" diamond with every shot at seven yards with either revolver, which is pretty good for my aging eyes and mediocre shooting skills.

Do you like three-inch revolvers? Why or why not? (It would be fun to hear some "why nots".) What kind do you have? Do you have a favorite? Do you have a good three-inch revolver story? And here's the big question: Do you have pictures of your three-inch revolver(s)?

I do, and I have a few.
I think they generally have a nice, balanced look and feel to them.

That being said - I'm not as big on them as I used to be.

It is a compromise length. For the considerations where it actually matters, either shorter or longer is going to be better for whatever reason.

Just goes to show that your tastes and/or reasoning can change. I never really thought about anything much over a 4-inch barrel until relatively recently (single actions notwithstanding). Now I have a few and appreciate them for their difference.

I've been looking at Taurus' new revolvers they released recently, and I've been seriously liking the look of the 3" six irons.

Specifically the Taurus Defender 856 T.O.R.O.. I've never cared for red dots, but something about this one caught my eye.

I've always liked the 3" pistols. Recently got a Taurus 856 3" to go in the stable. Its very well made. They have very obviously upped their QC game. It gives up nothing to other brands. I have 3" S&W 686+, M60 pro, and a Colt KC. This new Taurus runs with the pack as far as fit n finish.

I'm pleased with it and plan to get one for my lady.

I also like them . My Ruger 3” SP101 is my most carried handgun . I wear it when I am running my dogs . It’s not to big that it’s uncomfortable to wear all day and it weights enough that shooting.357’s isn’t too bad .

I will say that for a general do-it-all length that might include carry, the ~3" is hard to beat.

I still like them. My favorite for awhile.
I guess it's more that I 'came around' to 4" barrels and longer later in life.

I once had a 3" SP-101 for just such a role, and I kind of miss it.
At least it went to the best home I can think of...

The only 3" I have is a GP100 in 44 Special, and I like it alot. I do occasionally carry it, although I ordered a nice Hogue woody grip for it in that nice Cocobolo, that may or may not hinder that.
May add a 3" in 38 for carry. Waiting for the right one to come along

Does 2 3/4 count?

I have a few 3” to 3.5” revolvers about. I do appreciate the slightly longer sight radius and slight bit of recoil dampening weight out front over the 2”- odd snub nosed revolvers.

Of mine, a 3” Model 36 .38 Spl. with Pachmayr grippers.

For CCW, one thing that I recently figured out was a 3” Model 36 with oversized grips is much easier to shoot than with the tiny ones (especially the wooden panels!) But, this makes the J frame nearly the same size as a 9mm Browning Hi Power pistol. So for me, CCW with a 3” J frame 5 or 6-shot vs a similar sized auto with 15-shots +/- one or two, tilts me to carry the auto.

But this still does not dampen my love for revolvers with a 3” barrel.

Stay safe.

This is a Rossi Model 720. All of them were 3" stainless in 44 special. I thought I liked it so much because of the caliber, trigger, ergos, etc. I didn't realize that I was also really digging the barrel length. It sure is fun to shoot. :)

O 44 special is a hoot in a 3 inch. We know this very well........ 20230316_202857.jpg
