Does the cost of Ruger mags tick anyone else off?

All of the GSR rifles that I have seen came with Accurate Mags which are AI clones. Some GSR owners have complained about them rusting very quickly.

This thread is complaining about nothing...it's not like you are going to buy 10+ mags for this rifle, so what if you must pay $60-70 for the mag. My AI mags haven't had any issues and the Alpha/Morta along with Accurate Mags are all GTG.

Seems like these days people just like to complain online in these forums. If you don't like the cost of mags...go get yourself a C&R and start collecting surplus rifles.

Some people really like high priced mags and seem to take offense that others don't. Sorry for "complaining about nothing". I am sure I am the first. Your right though, I won't be buying 10+ mags for this rifle.

Ruger has turned a profit for all of their 62yr existence. They operate on cash. Have no debt. Name one other gunmaker with such a record. Maybe you know better how to run their business???

No debt. An unleveraged balance sheet. That right there tells me that these "re-tooling" costs are negligible ... or non-existant. So why the grossly over-inflated price for magazines?

You know, those Ruger rifles only have about $5 worth of wood and maybe $10 worth of steel. Obviously tooling and production costs are nothing since Ruger makes a profit. They should be selling their rifles for $15, maybe $16 at the most. Anything else is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Creature, it would appear that you have indeed discovered a niché market. If, as you say, these magazines are so grossly over priced, you could probably make a small fortune by starting a new business that makes magazines of the same exact quality as the Ruger ones but sell at whatever you think would be a reasonable price.

Perhaps you ought to do some research into this and let us know what you find.

If I grasp the spirit of this thread, the OP is questioning the price tag of the Rugers mags because it is somehow unfair. If you don't like the price of the Ruger mags, you don't have to buy Ruger mags. You could just buy AI mags, but then those aren't cheap either.

Personally, I look at it this way. I like my stuf to work, all of the time. Whenever I buy an AI mag, I attribute about $20 of the cost to the mag and the rest of the cost to peace of mind.

I like my stuff to work as well. My 17 dollar P-mags work. My 24 dollar Glock mags work just fine. I guess different strokes for different folks. 70 bucks for a 10 rd mag just seems really high to me. At this point it's the main reason I am not buying the rifle. I know that may sound silly to some but to me it is a big deal. I like having extra mags, especially for a rifle that bills itself as an "everything" rifle.

I was going to contribute to this thread, but it seems to have taken a nasty turn. I will just say that we live in a free market society (well kind of) and Ruger can choose to charge what they want. If you as a consumer find it too costly, you have the choice not to buy it. I looked at the mags and have found them to be of very high quality, so I have no problems paying for something nice. If you have a different opinion simply don't buy them. Bashing a company for trying to make a profit seems silly to me. As more of these magazines and rifles are produced, the price will come down.

As a side note, I tried to purchase some less expensive magazines for my GSR from C-Products and they were a total disaster. They fell apart, jammed the rifle, and came with zero customer service. I then purchased some slightly more expensive magazines form AI and they are flawless and make the rifle run much smoother. Money well spent in my book.

I believe that several folks are working on a polymer magazine for this rifle. When those come out, you may get your wish. I hope they come out as well.

THose are both magazines with a large user base and a high production number, so the fixed cost of the tooling can be absorbed by selling a higher number of magazines at a lower price point.

I would be surprised if there was one user for AICS mags for ten AR magazine users.

I hear ya man but I am still not cool with paying that much. If you are then great. I was just wanting to know if anybody thought it was high and I got my answer. To each his own.

There's a difference between carping about the price of something, and carping about the price of something after you've been informed of the economics behind what it takes to actually make such a product.

I cannot imagine, for the life of me, NOT buying a rifle I wanted that cost $750 because extra magazines were $70. Especially if that rifle were a boltaction .308, as opposed to an ammo waster like an AR. IMHO, that is silly beyond words and you probably weren't gonna buy one anyway.

 $17 for a P-Mag!?! I have no problem paying $70 for an AI mag. In fact I need to order 2 more, but $17 for a P-Mag is outlandish. Haven't paid more than $12.50 for one yet. If you have nearly as many P-mags as I do, you'd have paid for that AI mag several times over in what you've overpaid for AR mags.

Not to mention that the typical AR user also has many times the number of mags compared to the AI user. I, for instance, am a user of both and have probably 70x the number of AR mags that I have AI mags.
