Dpms 308

I got a buddy at work that bought a DPMS 308 AR10 for 800, he's not really liking his decision and wanting to get rid of it. I think its a good deal, sense now they're going for over 1000 in my local area. I just cant find a good reason to own one. I can reload for one. I dont think it would be all that hard to get ammo sense I am a reloader. Does anyone have one? What are your thoughts about it? Im just thinking to equip one might be kind of hard.

bull barrel?
fluting?
muzzle break/flash hider?

does it have a scope or any optics coming with it?

ive never been a fan of the AR10 as a defensive weapon but if its set up for target or long range shooting id buy it for that price

if its set up like an oversized M4 id have to say no thank you but YMMV

bottom line if you like it buy it if not stay clear

unless you get it just to make the extra $$$ by reselling it

I have the 308 C, also known as the tac20 and an AP4 in 308, I also own a few colts a BCM and a bushy. Iv'e had zero problems other then a bad round once in a while. The DPMS's have run fine and fun to shoot.

If its a DPMS it is is NOT an "AR-10."

Its an LR-308 (insert suffix).

My bad, it is a DPMS, so I reckon it cant be considered an AR10. It is a AR platform rifle. The only things that bother me is there is not very many rail options for the rifle. I dont really know exactly what I'd use it for, however I know its worth what I'd pay. 800 never been shot. I know a buddy of mine bought one at the same time, except not a "tax free" day here in AZ at a sportsmans warehouse, he actually bought 2, 1 to make a few bucks on and has had many offers for 1k but he wants 1100 so he's holding on to it. I think paying the 8 bills for it if I hate it I could possibly at the least make my money back later. Im just not the kind of guy to get rid of much that goes boom. I dont have a 308 but have an unlimited amount of 308 brass at my disposal all federal gold medal match. So i think i'll buy it.

Rails

If you want to add rails they take the same rail system as an AR 15. You will have no problems finding stuff to hang off it. On the less expensive side you have UTG two piece hand rails you can put on yourself. The LR308C and AP4 have standard .750 barrels and any front BUIS or gas block will fit, that's C model and AP4, not the bull/heavy barrels. The trigger group is also interchangeable with the AR15. If your not an operator and just a recreational shooter, the DPMS will last you and do fine and no need to buy a $2500 LMT or armorlite. You'll see a lot of non milspec guns getting hammered every weekend on the range and some of them are decades old. If your an operator then it's milspec all the way.

i have a dpms lr308 and its a fun, reliable and very accurate rifle. i have a 6X18 power redfield golden 5 star scope and using 150gr fed rounds im grouping about 1 1/2 at 250 yards on a rest. in my opinion the lr308 is a excelent rifle for the money

I've had my DPMS LR 308B for over 5 years, with over 2000 rds downrange.
In that time, it has been totally reliable, no jams, failures or anything breaking or causing problems.
It shoots WalMart .308 Fed 150 gr Power shok ammo into just over 1" @ 100 yds and my reloads, (168 gr Sierra HPBT Match bullet over 41 gr of IMR4895 in Fed brass) into 5/8 ~ 3/4" at 100 yds with boring reliability.
What's not to like? Accurate, reliable, powerful and - - - - - -
- - - - Just seeing it makes gun hating wusses wet their pants.

mines a 16 inch gun. Its very accurate and reliable but the blasted things sure are heavy!

I have the Remington R-25 version made by DPMS. The trigger was a sack-o-crap as are most AR single stages. I changed it out and gun shoots about 1.5 MOA with factory ammo. It is a heavy gun. I bolted a remington 700 scope base through the slots in the free float tube to mount a light, worked perfect.

Remember, if you are going to handload for ityou will need to full-length resize, not just neck size.

For rails, it depends a little bit on what you wan tto use them for. If it's optics, tten I would only use the flat-top rail on the reciever or a dedicated free-float tube like the ones from Badger Ordnance. (Very heavy and expensive.) If you just want to have some rails, for lights, etc, you can pop on a Magpul MOE grip for $30, and attach rail pieces wherever you want them.

I have the TAC20 with the quad-rail. Great rifle, never a miss feed and shoots 2.25" groups at 225 yards off bipod in moderate wind. That is good enough for me. Paid about $1,000 for it, put on a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40mm scope, and plan to shoot the snot out of it for some time. Forget the AR go the LR in 308.

The only question I have is 'do you already own a .308'? If not, and you think this is a good deal, then I would go for it. FWIW, I'm beginning to think that unless you are hunting/hiking with it a long distance (or some goofy multi-letter world-ending acronym is anticipated), I would own a .22LR rifle, and a .308, bypassing the .223/5.56 AR round.
Other than the weight of the ammo, and the cost of the ammo (but you re-load so it matters a lot less), the .223 is a 'tweener and I'd omit it.
Now I didn't follow my own advice, purchasing a .223 AR and only now ordering a .308 bolt rifle, but doing it all again, I'd get an FN SCAR 17 (heavy) with a 10/22 and be done with it. OTOH I don't reload for now, so that did affect my decision.
Of course, if you feel comfortable buying one of each that tickles your shooting fancy, then that has some appeal as well.
