Would it be dumb to buy one for this caliber? I guess I just wanted something in that caliber, but I want something more accurate than a mini 30.

No its not Dumb! If you want it buy it. Give us a range report also. I have a DPMS 5.56 and it has been great. Nice Rifle.

Now the only problem is finding one. They seem hard to find in this caliber. I have a DPMS in 308 on its way, I just almost pulled the trigger on buying a Mini-30. Anyone know what the out the door price should be on a 7.62x39 DPMS with a 20" barrel?

I don't have one, but there was recently a thread (what 7.62 would you buy before the ban) where several Panther owners weighed in. They are among the most tightly tolerated out there, making them extremely accurate way out. They are also therefore extremely tempermental to poor maintenance. They can only eat regular brass, no surplus. They need to be broken in to the letter of their instructions. If all those minor quirks are cool with you, the general consensus looks like they kick @$$.

I already have a Colt 223 Match Target, I ordered a DPMS LR-308 w/ 24" BB and my wife would like a 7.62x39. I guess I am all for it. Originally she wanted an AK, but the issue of accuracy came up and thought an AR would be much better. Thanks for the feedback!

The .308 does kick a little. I imagine the shorty round would feel closer to the .223. Otherwise the .308 is better in every way except price.

I have an ar 47. Reciever is made by special weapons inc. It is a modified ar reciever that takes ak mags. Shoots 7.62x39. Excellent accuracy. Will only shoot brass. No WOLF. Feed problems when using the wolf. Recoil not bad at all. Have no idea who made the upper. Bought it second hand a few years ago and really can't remember. Tried to sell it a while back, but my friend who "bought" it can't afford it, so he will be returning it. While he had it, I came across 4k rds of 7.62x39 brass millsurplus, for $600. So now I don't mind taking the gun back. (Actually I hounded him about the money, he said it would take a while, and I told him to just give me the gun back and forget the deal....)

Works for me.

I built my own 7.62x39 AR with a Colt barrel and bolt. It's more accurate than my AK or any of the dozen SKS I own. It also has much better sights and since it's a flattop is a better platform to mount optics.

Mine shoots Wolf, Silver Bear, Barnual, etc. It's never even seen a brass case.

If I was buying a complete .30 cal AR today, I'd probably buy something that could shoot 7.62x51. Of course then you'd be stuck with a dedicated lower that you couldn't use in anything else. I built this one to allow me to swap onto my existing 5.56 lowers since I only had a few lowers at the time.

Magazine availability is a problem. I have a couple USA brand Frankenmags that work great. C-Products is supposed to have some 7.62x39 mags in the works, but it's been a long wait for them.
