I have been wanting a 22" barreled AR but came across these things...What are the known facts or does anyone have experience. Barrel 1/9 verses 1/12 twist. Again both new from the factory in the box. :uhoh:

All info is greatly appreciated

Depends on what weight of bullets you want to shoot. I have a 1/9" twist and can shoot 75 gr, but any heavier and they will start going crazy and keyhole. At 1/12", you'll be looking at shooting ONLY light stuff. All depends on what you want to do with it.

I wanted something that will reach out past 400yards with velocity and still have stopping power but really didn't want to change calibers from the 223. Might just be wishful thinking or I woke up with the black fever? Thanks for the info

The 1/7 barrels have been good to me and probably the 1/9 would work just fine. I am not into paper holes mine are for Varmints. A long barrel AR-10 a friend shoots is nice at longer ranges but I did not want to change calibers and stock ammo for it. It really is not easy being me.

Stopping power at 400? Should I assume hunting, not paper-punching?

A heavy barrel with scope gets an AR up over nine pounds. That's not a whole bunch of fun for walking around a pasture. I've done it a lot, but I'm stubborn that way. :)

SFAIK, you'd want a twist for tight groups with 70-ish grain bullets.

Unless you're intending a bunch of long strings of fire and tight groups on paper, a light barrel will be as accurate at 400 as a heavy barrel. For three to five shots, anyway, if you're not doing rapid fire. Always has for me...

Got a link? That 2nd one sounds pretty cool. I've always wanted a 1/12 twist varmint ar. Wylde chamber will let you shoot m193 in it cheap. Though it won't stay sub moa. Will still be good for groundhogs and coyotes.
