I need help with the idea of making dry firing device for the rifle musket. I currently use 2 spend cap on top of nipple but they did not last long . I use duch tape , cardboard, foam and leather pad inside the nipple but the nipple flash hole will cut them and it clog inside the nipple. What is the best material that can stand up the impact of hammer ? Should I instead use some type of padding inside the hammer where it contact nipple instead such as piece of hard rubber? I think it will still get cut through after a few hammer drop.

Taking a hint from the British Enfield rifled musket (the gun I love so dearly), it use to have a round ball that was flattened to fit over the nipple. A chain connecting it to the trigger guard kept it from being lost. The hammering of the hammer cold forged the top portion of the ball.

I know a "heavy-duty" blackpowder match shooter, who makes rubber or nylon covers that fit over the nipple assembly and pad the hammer blow.

The nylon models last a long time according to him.
He just buys some nylon rod, cuts off a section, drills a hole that fits down over the entire nipple assembly, and rounds the top off slightly.
