Two dead in 'duel' on Naples street

Comparisons between Naples and the Wild West were never so apt as yesterday after a bloody shoot-out between two mafiosi that left both men dead in a busy street.
In an initial blaze of gunfire, one man, Giovanni Magrelli, 44, was killed, while the other, Raffaele Di Lorenzo, 45, lay wounded on the ground.
At this point, however, police claim that the murdered man's 14-year-old son, Costantino, took the gun from his dead father's hand, went over to his injured foe and shot him in the head.
The teenager was in custody in a local jail yesterday, as were six others variously accused of conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and causing a riot.
Investigators claim the two dead men staged a showdown worthy of Dodge City when a fight between their offspring spiralled out of control.
Both Magrelli and Di Lorenzo, it transpired, had criminal records for drugs and were linked to the local Rega crime clan, although Magrelli was said to have defected to another family, the Mazzarellas.
Di Lorenzo's son Antonio, 20, was said to have been punching the 14-year-old when relatives arrived to defend the younger boy.
A brawl then erupted between the rival families, involving some 20 people, until the two capifamiglia reached for their guns.
When Costantino's father pulled out a Smith & Wesson, and his rival produced a 9mm handgun, the others began diving for cover.
The two deaths brought the toll involving organised crime in greater Naples to 20 this year.
The Italian government has recently talked about purging Naples of its criminal "cancer", and reinforcements have been sent to bolster an already huge police force of 13,000. Yet the blood-letting, mainly the result of a fight for control of the lucrative drug trade, continues.
