So, I am a 35-year-old who has only owned a gun for 6 months and last fired a non-air gun was when visiting a cousin when I was about 13 up until I bought one of my own. My father has a few guns and has had a .22 revolver and .22 rifle sitting around the house all the time and then long after my brother and I were moved out he got a 12ga and a 30/30, which he almost never shoots. So given that my dad had reason to be in a poor mood over the past couple of weeks, I decided to see about taking him along with me to the range to shoot my 9mm, his rifles and .22 revolver, and those of my friend who owns the range.

The range is a private outdoor range where the owner has given me access. The owner of the range lives just a few hundred yards away and said he may come join us if he heard shooting. So my dad and I loaded up with his guns and mine, drove out and started shooting. We began with the .22 rifle and the 30/30 Marlin lever gun and from 100 yards neither of us could hit the target. Now mind you we were shooting 8" pistol-range type targets and we were 100 yards away. I think we hit the target one time between us out of about 100 rounds. We moved to 50 yards and didn't fare any better. That's what you get for a lifetime with no shooting. Who knows if the sights are even close to right on these guns. We don't know where the rounds that didn't hit the target went. That would be about 199 out of 200.

About the time we moved on to the pistol range and started popping off 9mm and .22 rounds, the range owner rolls up in his little ATV and presented his new Ruger LCP and STI Rogue for us to try. My dad could not hit anything with any gun to save his life... He started out shooting his .22 (which he could not hit anything with) and then my 9mm and was convinced that something might be wrong with the guns until he handed me back my 9mm and I managed to put the whole mag full on the 8" target with ease at 7 yards. I know this is not impressive shooting but it was nice for one of us to hit something.

Soon after we started looking at the STI and LCP, we looked up and saw two county sheriff's deputies walking up. Turns out some nearby neighbor had called to report gunshots and the deputies were dispatched. Little did they know that this particular range is owned by a county judge who promptly invited them to leave. That was kinda fun.

Finally when we got to shooting the STI, when it was not jamming, we were all hitting the targets much better and my dad was on the paper and feeling much better about himself.

Maybe I can talk my dad into coming back out again soon.

BTW that trigger on that old H&R revolver was about 10x as stiff as my Sigma. Boy howdy! You have to mean it to pull that trigger (double-action of course).

Nice of you to tke the old man out for a bit. He wont be around for ever try to do it again soon. and buy him a 9mm of his own for his birthday or christmas,

Sounds like a start. If you don't hit at 100, you have to pull the targets into 25 yards, post as big a target as you can, and see where you are hitting. Then make appropriate adjustments with your sights. Then move to 50, test. Then move to 100 or more. Might want to focus on rimfires next time. They're a lot easier to hit accurately with, since there is little recoil and thus less liklihood of flinching.

It's been 30 years since my dad adjusted the sights on his .22 rifle and he said he'd not shot more than 5 shots through the 30/30 since he bought it. We plan to go back out and correctly sight in the rifles once the weather gets a little better (it's real hot here now). It was fun!

My dad is only about 57 but his near vision is not as good as it used to be. I think being unable to see the sights might have been a big problem for him. For me, I have never ever shot a rifle. I have 20/20 vision and I know full well that I had the target dead on in my sights with the .22 when I was shooting it, but like I say, we didn't hit a thing with it. Next time we'll take out some big paper and work it out.

I think my dad has to get good with his own .22 revolver before he's ready for another gun. He's got about 2000 rounds of .22LR ammo that we can go practice with. Being a lefty I figure many autos are not going to work out. The slide release and mag release were in his way.

Sounds like a good time!

I haven't been shooting with my dad since I was 13. Last time he was down, he got sick (while on vacation...) and we weren't able to hit the range. Hopefully next time.

Good advice all around:
-Start closer
-Maybe shoot cans and milk jugs in addition to paper
-Keep the Judge happy...make sure to pick up any mess if you shoot cans, milk jugs, etc.
