I can't tell you Marine procedure, but in the Army it's part of my PCI to make sure the Squad Leaders double checked that each and every one of their squad members put plugs in before we leave the FOB. We don't leave without eyepro either. Take if for what it's worth.

In Blackhawk down one of the soldiers couldn't hear a damn thing when his buddy cut loose with a SAW next to his head.

When I shoot I wear the muffs. Once I let my boy have them and I used foam plugs and I could definitely tell a big difference. My ears did ring and I am not into that. I know from too much loud music at 49 I am sub par and will not encourage much more.

I have hearing loss and constant ringing in both ears from Combat in Viet Nam. Since most of us hopefully will not be in Combat, hearing protection around any loud noises, gunshots, power tools, lawnmowers, car races, concerts or your buddies boom box radio or stereo or tv is a good idea.
