Gun and Knife murders out of control
Monday, 25th June 2007, 07:25
Category: Crime and Punishment
Gun and knife killings are getting out of control as six Londoners were murdered over the past week and one child is stabbed to death each week, anti-crime campaigners warned.

Local communities were being blighted by run-away violence as gang members who believe they are "untouchable" carry guns and weapons as a matter of routine to carry out crimes and to settle scores.

Now as a matter of "urgency," police should carry out random and targeted stop and search to catch weapon wielding thugs backed up with the introduction of a mandatory five year prison sentence for those carrying illegal knives - the same penalty as carrying guns.

Last Sunday Lee Ryner, 30, was stabbed in Romford. Then father of three Ken Hong, 38, died of his injuries after being thrown from his car as he tried to stop a car thief in Streatham on Wednesday.

Two days later Brazilian Carlos Moreno, 23, was gunned down as he arrived outside a friend's home in Acton on Friday evening.

Hours later Mikey Brown, 24, was stabbed to death during a row in a nightclub in Kinsgston at 2am on Saturday morning, and four hours later 17-year-old Annaka Pinto was shot dead during another row in an Tottenham club.

Then just before midnight on Saturday a 16-year-old was stabbed to death in a gang clash in Beckenham.

Victims of Crime Trust director Norman Brennan said Britain was quickly gaining a reputation as being one of the most violent countries in the Western world, scarring communities and leaving millions in fear of crime.

Now he urged tougher action to stamp out the spiralling violence, claiming the Government has failed to uphold its pledge to make Britain's street safer.

He said: "In the past six days there have been three people stabbed to death, two people shot dead and one father fatally injured when he was run over by his own car whilst trying to prevent it from being stolen.

"A child is stabbed to death on the streets of Britain every week and knife homicides out number gun homicides by three to one. If these measures were introduced it would greatly reduce knife crime and consequently save lives.

"I believe that the government who came into power with the slogan 'tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime' have failed to deliver on their promises to make the streets of Britain safe.

"We have many individuals and gang members that carry guns and knives as a matter of routine to commit crime and protect themselves and their turf, believing that they are untouchable.

"Unless we can change this attitude and trend, senseless murders will continue unabated and the widespread fear of crime will continue to be controlled by such individuals."

"Each murder affects on average three hundred people. Murders committed in various parts of the country or particularly within a close radius of each other have a ricochet affect and dramatically increase fear within communities."

He added although government figures show a small reduction in gun related crime, it is under reported and has to be viewed against "unprecedented" high levels of knife and gun crime over the last five years.

Although the Trust welcomed the fact the majority of murders leads to an arrest and conviction, prevention is a better cure it said.

Mr Brennan said: "There are currently 270 recorded firearm related offences committed on the streets of Britain every week."

Shopkeeper fined £250 for hitting back against thieves
Simon de Bruxelles

A shopkeeper has been fined £250 and given a criminal record because he fought back when he was attacked by shoplifters.

Jacob Smyth chased three youths out of his hardware shop in Penzance, Cornwall, when he was set upon. When he was kicked in the groin by one of the hooded youths who had stolen cans of spray paint Mr Smyth hit back.

Police issued fixed penalty tickets to the shoplifters but charged Mr Smyth and a colleague with assault.

Yesterday he pleaded guilty to assault at Truro Magistrates’ Court. He claimed after the hearing that he had been advised to plead guilty because otherwise he could have faced a six month prison sentence.

The court was told that Mr Smyth, a father of three, caught the youths stealing the spray cans in October last year. Two of them turned on him and he was kicked in his groin just weeks after a vasectomy operation. He retaliated and punched 18-year-old Craig Spiller to the ground.

Paul Gallagher, defending, said: “The court can only imagine what they intended to do with that spray paint. He could see the cans poking out of their pockets. He leant forward to get them and at that stage he was set upon.

“He did punch one of them to get him off. In the heat of the moment he kicked him once or twice. Initially he was acting in self defence. Frustration at the situation took over. The lads were interviewed and given fixed penalty notices by police but unfortunately for Mr Smyth ended up in court today.

“He was the one who was trying to do the right thing and get his stolen property back.”

Julian Herbert, prosecuting, said the “aggravating factor” of the case was shop staff “taking the law into their own hands”. Fining Mr Smyth £250 and ordering him to pay £43 costs, Angy Haslam, chairman of the magistrates, said: “The act was aggravated by the fact you kicked the victim on the ground. We feel it has been mitigated because you acted in self defence.”

Speaking outside court, Mr Smyth said: “I did nothing wrong. I was getting a good beating from this lad. I had no choice but to defend myself.

“We get shoplifters all the time one after the other. We call the police but nothing is ever done. We called them on this occasion and ran after the lads to try and get my property back but then they turned on us. “Am I not allowed to protect my stock and premises from thieves?”

Mr Smyth’s colleague Jason Pascoe, 34, has also been charged with two counts of common assault and will appear in court at a later date.

What in the name of Churchill is wrong with those people? Are they all a bunch of Chamberlains now, appeasing the punks and other vermin who abuse the good folks? Glad I am an American.

IllHunter

Hit the nail on the head and drove it deep. I apologize, I feel no remorse for a country that is so blatantly....stupid. I feel sympathy for those that must endure being helpless. Chock this one up under another reason America rocks!

What England needs to do is outlaw being a criminal surely that will fix everything.

Nonsense,

England just needs to take away those nasty offensive pointy knives, and issue all of its subjects a Spork but only with proper registration licensing and training, and a level 2 spork retention Holster.

And then all of its subjects will be safe, and crime will disappear.:neener:

Its the knives and the Guns you know that cause the problems. Criminals are just victims of an inproper upbringing and the short falls of our society. Guns and knives are evil and they persuade innocent youth to take up a life of crime.

But they can't see the useless spiral.

Ban guns --> more knife crime --> ban knifes --> no drop in violent crime --> more penalties for violent crime --> no drop in violent crime

Now they want random searches of vehicles for weapons. Of course they won't do the one thing that might bring the violence under control.

I am all for the knife ban I just have some questions:

- After they ban the knives will all the meat come from the store freshly ground? Or will they give up the pretext and switch to a vegan diet.... beeeaaaahhhh.

- Will all rope become detachable velcoro?

- Will carvers, carpet layers, stock boys, constructions workers, sailors and the like have to get a special license and join a special club to get a knife they need for work? Or will they be issued by a state agency?

In a nation of once pround sailors they will look awfully silly without knives but it is for the children...

between this and the other article with the guy getting fined for defending himself, I am thinking the time for the silent majority to get loud and angry is overdue in that country.

A strong and capable people in the past can choose to be so in the future. Choose before all is lost.

ServiceSoon, don't bet on it. Maybe not today or tomorrow but possibly in the near future. Look at what laws have been forced on us so far.

See also the thread on understatement of violent crime in the UK.

Already they have the most violent crime per capita of any developed country-for the last three years running.

When a homeowner cannot be paroled (for killing a burglar in self-defense) because he is a "menace to burglars" (presiding judge's words) then you know the lunatics are running the asylum.

Actually, I think only licensed chefs can buy pointed knives.

OT, but I remember going to a Civil War museum and they had a display for sailors. Their knives were all blunt-tipped to keep them from killing eachother in knife fights.

And people wonder why I'm absolutely convinced that the antis are in league with the bad guys.
